Sounds like syncros to me. You'll probably have to tear it apart. Replacing it might be easier if you can find one cheap enough. Just hope it doesn't start getting stuck in gear. That's the biggest pain to deal with.

i have this problem. i replaced my tranny. but kept my old one and gonna rebuild it myself. mostly for personal exp.
rebuilding it cost about the same prize as another b16 tranny.... so up to you

ya its weird everyone told me syncros or new tranny but i just got back from filling up the fluid and driving it its fine now but because it had no fluid for so long reverse kinda screwed up i think its cuz reverse is the only gear not syncroed therefor the gear itself probable got chewed up a little but ya problem gone now thanks EK

You're lucky! I had that happen on 2 trannies and both of them lost 5th before I was able to put more fluid in them.

Re: (allmotorEG-SI)
same here. fluid didn't help me out...
and 1st gear isnt syncrod either.
thats why down shifting into 1st is so hard compared to 2nd-4th

syncros match the speed of the shafts when shifting....they dont hold the forks. detents hold it in gear.

No it doesn't. Though he probably will have to tear it apart.
Doesn't sound the synchros at all, sounds like the 5th gear fork is bent. Miss any shifts lately?

yes... i missed shifted 3rd pretty bad while racing the motor... i was used to driving a scion tc and my civi came with a piece of **** short shifter and worn out bushings making it VERY vauge feel in the tranny... so it WAS me.. i was thinking maybe i got it that way and he didn't tell me. oh well.

Everyone knows that. It's pretty much common knowledge.
edit: to be fair it could be the detent too but the synchro for that gear is much more likely on a honda manual trans.
