CRV allwheel drive system
I may be crazy, still researching it... but what do you guys think about retro fitting the CRV's allwheel drive system to a 5th gen prelude. could it be done? worth the effort? worth the money?....not looking for people to flame about how stupid an idea this is, like I said i'm still researching it, just want some "constructive" opinions.
ok, I haven't checked into it yet, CRV'S don't have a manual option?, and as far as the eclipse tranny, they break too easy, I would want something durable....not that I would really go through w/ this yet
if you had to pay someone to do this, you would spend enough money to buy another prelude, another eclipse, and have enough left over to sm0ke w33d every day!
Actually, you can get the awd CRV in 5 speed. There are two main problems tho.
1) You have to use the whole tranny, meaning you'd have to use a b series engine.
2) The awd takes too long to engage.
When the front wheels start to spin, it raises oil pressure in either the transfer case or the rear end (I forget which). When the oil pressure is at a cirtain level it engages the awd. Since it is not a diff controlled awd system it would be too dangerous to try it in a car like the Lude. Imagine being in an understearing situation. Then, all of a sudden, the rear wheels kick in half way through the turn. Yea, that would be scary.

ahhh! racerx, thank you for your reply, that is exactly what I was looking for, I have done a little research and found out a little about the CRV's system and yes that would suck, it would be nice to have an all wheel drive Prelude though.
but just for the sake of argument, and you seem to know more than I have found out at this point, is there anyway you could up the oil pressure or do some kind of hack so the system engages earlier?(short of welding the transfer case) and is there anyway around using the CRV transmission housing(retro fit to h-series)

Honestly, I don't really know. I would imagine that even if you did raise the oil pressure you still have the disatvantage of the system being driven by fluid. Fluid will always have lag and is very inefficient compared to a mechanical system.
Retro fitting the transfer case to the h series tranny seems risky. It has to be sealed and perfectly aligned with the flywheel since thats what drives it. You'd probably have to design and build a whole new trans case for it to work.
You also can't forget the rear spindels. They too would have to be scratch built to accept a drive axle.
There is an upside if you can get it all to work tho. The CRV has a multi link rear- end
How much research have you done?

racerx, very little at this point...working on getting the factory service manual from my guy @ Honda, I have checked into the rear end(spindles, axles etc) the CRV has very tiny rear axles, not sure how durable those would be and I'm sure that the spindles/hubs are the same, driveshaftshop.com will fab a set of axles for this project if I want I talked to them yesterday when I ordered a set of stage 2's for a friend.(roughly $800 w/ shipping, including spindles, axles, hubs, etc.)

I can make drive axles at work so thats not too difficult. I don'tr see the spindals working tho. The CRV rear suspension is totally different. Actually, allot of the fabed stuff I can make at work. Building hot rods has its bonuses even if 90% are Fords.
Boosted: This is my first reaction to what I've read on your post so far. The awd Civics are't even worth the time. By the time you built everything up to tripple digit hp ratings, it would still be weaker than a stock 3g. Then you have a tranny that is fully built to handle 130- 160hp. Not fun for the street and still not up to par.
At this point, I've got the ability to make a 3g awd. Its just getting the $$$ and figuring out some of the minor bugs we'll probly encounter allong the way.

if you notice a lot of other idea were tossed around, and i never said i wanted to use an actual Civic AWD, i just wanted to use it for a basis of comparison, the CRVs awd systems uses electronics and pumps and ****, while as the Civic AWD isall mechanical, that's why i would prefer to base a system off of a Civic
