Default Found some copper shavings in oil pan

My friend had to replace his oil pan gasket on his 93 Prelude (4WS) and when we pulled it off and looked inside for ***** and giggles.... lord be hold there were copper shavings in there.

Some of them looked pretty recent. There was a decent amount for what it was.

Also, when he revs it high, white smoke kinda pops out the back.

I am just wondering where the hell that copper stuff is coming from. We are thinking it's piston rings and his motor is about to fry. But we need a second opinion.

If it's the piston rings, we need to know now so we can go ahead and pull that **** and get the block rehoned and everything replaced. But we are still not sure.

first off, don't be impatient, this thread wasn't even a 1/4 of the way down and you asked again <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by P1mpSlap &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">anyone know?</TD></TR></TABLE>obviously no one that had read it up to this point knew

second, are you postive it was copper?? i am not sure of what would cause copper shavings in the oil pan. it could be metal shaving from any number of things, from bearings, to piston rings, the best bet will be to get some pics

how old is the motor??? i took the oil pan off of my Lude after about 500miles and it had some metal shavings that appeared to be copper, i tore the engine down again this week, 3k miles later, and there were none, sometime when an engine is new, it can shave excess metal from places

Engine has 60K miles on it.

The shavings didn't apear to be oil soaked like they were sitting in there for a while.

shavings are normal. when you take physics you learn that you cant eliminate mass or energy... everything is converted and ****. fact of the matter is... when things heat up, they expand.... friction happends and metal gets shaven down. most older cars actually have magnets in the oil pan to gather the metal to prevent it from getting back into the motor.
well, i think thats the explanation... hehehe, correct me if im wrong again.

shavings are not normal, shavings are BAD. What we need to know though is how MUCH shavings are we talking about here and how large are they? As far as the white smoke, that means he is most likely burning oil. Have you done a compression test or a cylinder leakdown test on the motor? It could be the pistons, piston rings, bearings, etc etc. I recommend diagnosing the problem before putting it back on the road. Putting 1 and 1 together, if he is burning oil and not checking it he have ran it low and thats when some internal damage occured. By the way, you might want to do some more research on the law of conservation of mass.

tsk tsk tsk people . . . . . guy . . . if there are copper, shavings in your oil pan gasket, and we're talking copper, and of copper color, its more than likely a bearing . . . . this is how my Si went . . . . changed my gasket , saw the large amounts of flakes and knew what was to come . . . shortly after ( about 3 to 4 weeks) a distinctive rattling noise from the engine was heard at around 3500 rpms . . . where it was the loudest ( sounds kind of like a bad axle when your turning a hard corner) . . . . if you hear this man . . . . this is not good, and enjoy the last few days with that motor . . . im not an expert, I can only tell you from my past experiences, and it sounds like I was in the same boat as you . . . thats all I can say

Wouldn't white smoke mean headgasket? Or coolant is being burned? Isn't oil smoke blue... I could be wrong??

Ok, thanks for the info. I'll break the news to him.

Is there anyway to save it though? I dont think my friend will enjoy hearing about this. Unless he can easily come upon a H23swap or something.

You think it's cheaper to swap a new motor than have the crank pulled and everything remachined?

that all depends on whos doing the work. Most of the cost will be from the laybor. If he know his way around an engine and can do it him sell it would save a lot. But that also depends on if he wants just stock parts of to fully build his engine.
