Y8 head/intake mani on D15... few issues left: timing, distributor, belt, head gasket, OBD problems,
I just read a post on the D16Y8 head/intake manifold on the B7, but I have a few more technical problems that I would like your help on!
Which distributor should i use? Are there any timing issues that I have to deal with or consider with the new head, cams, and distributor?
Which timing belt do I use for this mini-me setup?
I found this web-site that has a D-series compression ratio calculator, and it says my new CR will be ~ 10.2:1. How accurate is this figure? How will my stock rods cope with the higher compression? Should I use a higher grade fuel?
Also, in the future, I might consider going turbo... I would like to use a headgasket that is on the thicker side and that is of good quality. 1.) it will lower my CR as is, which should be 'on the safer side', and 2.) If i do go turbo, the lower CR will mean more boost.
I believe the D16Y8 was OBD-II, and my car is OBD-I. If I use the OBD-I VTEC ecu, should I be okay, or are there other issues to consider?
Speaking of ecu's, what is the better setup, p78 or whatever the number is (i think thats the EG SOHC VTEC ecu), or my current ecu + fields/AFC controller? I think I would have a little more tuneability in the long run with the seperate controller, but, I would have to tune it properly and probably have access to a dyno that can help me with my A/F ratios.
And, if I use the stock sohc vtec ecu, will my fuel curves and other components run properly with the different bottom end?
And finally, the head/intake manifold will be comming from a manual car. Mine is an auto. What about the IACV valve? On the man. its on the intake manifold, auto's have them on the TB. Should I just use my TB and leave the other one in the IM but do not hook it up?
Thanks, thats all I can think of now, if I have further questions, I'll be sure to ask!
Oh yea, here's a link to the site, I think I got it from another thread...

Where's the D-series

anyone got any info to help a brotha' out?
guess I'll try the Hybrid forum...

use the b7 dizzy it should work
use the y8 gasket
use the y8 t-belt
your c/r is more like 10.5:1
i think i gave you that url
run the highest pump gas you can
you should use the p28 obd1 vtec ecu and maybe an afc
also you do not need to lower cr for turbo. if you have a higher cr and a lower boost then you can put out the same hp as a low cr high boost engine. and if you go higher cr lower boost you will have less lag. but it is more dangerous and not recommended for a daily driven turbo application

Thanks for the SOHC love, man! haha
I was thinking of going 'safer', meaning I would lower the CR a little so that my paper-clip sized rods wouldn't snap under the same boost at a higher CR. Also, I dont know if I can afford that expensive gas!
Yea, you might have given me that link, it's pretty useful (assuming its accurate).
I was almost 100% sure that I had to use a VX SOHC VTEC-E t-belt. I know you have to use it for the D16Z6 Head on a B7 block, so I was guessing it would be the same for the y8 head...
Oh, and is the Z6 headgasket thicker than the Y8?
And I've also heard that the Y8 head flows better? any thoughts on this?

well in reality the y8 has alot of unused potential, the swirl pattern used in the intake ports to make more turbulance messes up the flow characteristics. so in reallity the z6 has a better flow ability, but a good p&p can give upwards of 15hp on the y8. you should go y8 it is better in the long run. and i am pretty sure that the y8 t-belt will work. but if it doesnt then just try the vx. i am going to start my mini-me in a couple of weeks and i have done alot of research. also if you want to lower the cr alot then you should think of the R-ideal, kometic(cometic)spellling, lower compression gaskets. my team members are lowering their y8 r to 8.8:1 with one of those 2mm gaskets.

Hey, cool, I've been doing a lot of reasearch too, but wasn't too clear just quite yet.
Doing it on your D15B7 in your sig? Cool! Maybe I can learn from your mistakes
and successes
I'm trying to think of what else I need to consider. Oh, is there anything else I should do whilest I am changing heads? I hear I should change my water pump... whats wrong with the one thats in there? does it need a changing after 100k miles, eh?
Should I screw with the timing at all?
I hope I can get access to a dyno to tune this bad-boy.
Oh, and what fuel setup are you using? Upgrading injectors, pump, or map (with an AFC or such)??
