do you need a fuel pump strainer?
I would not mess with taking it off, the side effects could end up costing some very serious $$$$$. From partically(sp) clogged injector(s), causing a lean condition in one or more cylinders, and a hole being burned through a piston(s). Or just flat clogging the injectors, causing the engine not to run at all... hehehehe
I would not take the chance either.
It is meant to keep the big stuff out of the line so not to clog the line to the filter. Kind of like a pre-filter.

Plus it actually acts to shift the intake of fuel lower in the tank, so the pump isn't left sucking air above the level of fuel
I wouldn't run without one!
