Default SMS ITR 2.5" Exhaust Installed

Went to SMSP yesterday to help Dave test fit and install his new 2.5" cat-back exhaust system on my car. We have been discussing a design that would be fairly quiet, free-flowing, and adjustable in length to accomodate header adjustments. Here are some pics and narratives.

Dave is a Magnaflow dealer so we used an oval can and resonator. We used mandrel bends to construct the entire exhaust system.

Magnaflow 2.5" Center/Offset can was used.

Here is looking into the can. We used an offset to help keep noise down just a bit. Still pretty straight thru as you can see.

Here is the completed exhaust in sections. The adjustable insert, B-pipe, and can. I showed it this way because once it is painted flat black with heat paint, you can't see much.

Here is a closer look at the adjustable B-pipe. We use a collar to clamp the exhaust. Currently we have about 2'-2.5' of overlap. We did it this to allow enough piping to remove the cat and extent it to the header. Instant test pipe. This of course is designed so that when I tune the length of the header and the exhaust can lengthen and/or shorten with my needs.

Here is final product! We used my OE tip to finish off the look.

Here is the B-pipe.

Here is what the unknowing prey see!

The exhaust is a bit louder than stock under acceleration. It actually gets quieter the higher up the rpm band I go. It is still elevated at cruising(highway) speeds, but not nearly as bad as many exhaust out there I've heard. My girlfriend approved it!

Performance wise....wow! My modified OE exhaust was a real hinderance I have found out. See below pic. Power has increased substantially across the board. Words can never do it justice! I will be dynoing in 2 weeks.

Dave is out of town until Thursday, so please be patient with responses! He has plans to possibly manufacturer the B-pipes as a single piece along with custom can possiblities. He DOES NOT have pricing available yet for this unit. Please let him know about your interest.

Looks great! Are all of the components stainless? I see that the stocker that you swapped out already had the restriction at the cat flange removed. And you still noticed an improvement? Very cool.

Zeus~

Since I'm running Spec B's the idle sound is very deep and lumpy. I've heard a Tanabe & N1 set-up with these cams and this set-up matches that. It isn't deafening, but at a stoplight it's very obvious that the car isn't stock. As the exhaust note climbs, there is no raspy sound as with the JDM set-ups I mentioned. Only a deep note or at least as deep a note as a 4 banger can have!

2kbill~

My set-up uses a combination of mild steel and 409 stainless. After reviewing cost with Dave, I chose to go with these materials. That is why we used the high-temp paint, ie. rust prevention and slight scavenging benefits. If the manufactured B-pipes go into production, then I'm sure SS will be utilized throughout.

PS~

After removing my OE axle-back we discovered that piping reduces to about 2" to the can. That means, even though I modded my B-pipe with the 2.5" with transition adapter to 2.25", I still had major restriction the axle back.

Looks good man. Wish I had a quieter exhaust sometimes. But I know that the Spec B's are gonna love my exhaust when I get them.

There are two restrictions in the oe exhaust. Just after the cat and before the pipe goes into the muffler. Someone said that there is a restriction just before the break of the b-pipe and axle back, but I couldn't find it.

Todd00~

There are actually 3 major restrictions in the OE cat-back. The two you mentioned at the the cat/B-pipe connection and at the can, as well at the cat-back/axle-back connection. This connection actually reduced to under 2". My point was, the axle-back is not 2.25" piping as most people think. It is only 2". With the entire OE cat-back off, the reduction in size to the B-pipe was obvious. Hope that clarifies it.
