Default WTF!! I blew out a inner wheel well today. Has this happened to anyone else?

Scared the livin' $h!t outta me . I was in my 90 hatch rollin along with this guy in a 325i (I think) on the turnpike doin about a buck ten or so cause the traffic was relatively light and all of a sudden WHAMM!!! The car shakes for a couple of seconds then everythings back to normal with the exception of my heart rate. I look in the rear view and see something that looks like a long strip of tire carcass floppin down the road behind me and think it cant be part of one of mine cause the car is drivin like normal. So I slow down to about 70 and the guy in the bmw pulls up next to me and asks if everythings ok (mighty nice of him) and I proceed to take both hands of the steering wheel and say "Uhh yeah, I guess so" . So then I ask him if he saw what it was and he yells back "I think you ran over a tire" Now I,m thinkin No freakin way did I just mow a tire and not see it comin so I pulled over at the next place I could to check for any damage. so I get out of the car and walk around to the front of the car and notice that the passenger side corner marker is gone and the wires are hangin out of the hole in the fender. So I take a closer and see that along with that, the lower splash guard (that piece of plastic under the resonator box) and the entire inner wheelwell are also gone! As I said, WTF!!! I'm thinkin that maybe the leading edge of the splash guard under the bumper caught some air and got bent back under the front tire and then took the wheel well with it,maybe its all one piece. Still cant figure out the corner light though. A word of caution to those do some high speed drivin, Check those stupid little screws that hold that stuff in place!

Mine was ripped out by my tire (scared the **** outta me too). I'm probably going to replace it though, I don't like getting rocks in the engine bay and in the rain I get water spots everywhere around the front quarterpanel (black cars, man).

Same thing happened to my friend at about the same speed. Maybe the air builds up in that region - good for CAI, not so good for inner fenders ...

Yep happened to me, ripped out my corner lamp and all the wires, and it bent my fender on my old hatch. What happens is the part that covers your cold air filter flips down and at a good rate of speed rubs the tire, as soon as you hit the smallest bump your suspension compresses and it gets sucked right under the wheel. kind of like the saying , dont wear loose clothing while operating machinery.

Yeah I removed mine when I did my engine swap, they get in the way of everything and are really annoying. Plus who really cares if the engine gets dirty, its an engine, thats it's job.

The ironic part of the whole deal is that I had just left a import parts yard not 20 minutes before and by the time I got turned around and made it back the farkin place was closed. Looks like another road trip to another parts yard (open on sunday)

Just a fyi , once you remove the inner fender plastic you rocker panel will rot out because all the water and salt(up north here) will kick off your tire and go right into you rocker panels.

I'm looking to get mine coated with that ryno lining stuff. Then pur some kind of riveted aluminum in the fender well to keep dirt and crap from going everywhere. Should weigh less than 2 pounds a side to do all that. Rust proof, and kinda blingy... Not too bad for homemade, IF/when I get around to it.

replace your splash guard screws with zip ties. this should greatly reduce the risk of this happening. how did your corner lenses and fender get ripped apart tho? you just lost the dust shield for the inner fender and cai?
