Default magnetic drain bolt alternative

i was looking through jc whitney the other day,and i came across a magnetic belt that fits around the oil filter to trap metal particles. Isn't this more equal if not more effective than the Spoon magnetic drain bolts?

if it works - probably a good idea

the spoon plug probably will help collect stuff before it gets into the oil pickup.

i think the more effective of the two plugs spoon makes is the transmission magnetic plug

Default Stock Gearbox

Hey Big Phat R,

When you get the chance to get your hands dirty and crack a gearbox, you will find out the stock gearbox already contains a magnet in the bottom! Make your own much less expensive than purchasing Spoon. All you need to do is purchase some small round bar stock magnet from the local hobby shop drill your drain plugs, cut the magnet to the proper size and JB weld in place.

Isn't cutting magnets hard? They seem kinda brittle.

I'd rather pay the $55cdn and buy the spoon ones. I just got them today from A&J. At least I don't have to worry about the magnetics breaking off!!!

I said $55 CANADIAN DOLLARS (cdn = CANADIAN) = $35 US.

That includes BOTH the Tranny AND the Oil plugs.

Your price is $10 x 2 = $20 US for Pep Boys ****.
My price for the Spoon ones is $35 US for BOTH.

So it costs $15 extra for me to get the Spoon Magnetic plugs:

The benefits of the Spoon plugs over the Pep Boys plug:
I can talk **** and say I have Spoon plugs
Don't have to worry about them breaking
Don't have to waste time trying to find the right ones
Don't have to worry about them not fitting

That alone is worth MORE than $15US!!!

just wondering what the advantage is of having a magnetic oil drain plug when about 90% of the honda engine is made of aluminium. the only iron/metal/steel would be the cylinder walls, rods, crank, cams, lifters and a few other things. i dont think they flake/wear off any peices of steel that often.

for the transmission i understand that would be usefull as all the gears are steel. but the engine i dont think there is much need for one. or is there? i guess for peice of mind?

The thing is how great is the quality, will the magnetic tip break off on the pep boys one? At least with the Spoon I know iI am getting high quality parts.

Magnetic drain bolts have been around for like 50 years.
you can buy most decent kinds at any local auto parts stores.
If yer Really Keen© you can get a set from a racing store.

All of the above cost anywhere form $5 - 10 bucks. (for both)

There's nothing special about the spoon bolts, except the "quality".
You can even take a tiny drill bit, and make your own saftey-wire holes,
for those of you needing them for oval track use.

Who said the Spoon magnetic drain bolt won't break?? Here is a picture of a broken one. But I put the oil pan one into the tranny by mistake. The drain bolt broke and it took the Cusco FD along with it.

Yeah those things are really fragile.
the magnetic probe part is easily snapped off.

dont drop it while you change the oil

I have had the drain bolts from pep boys for quite awhile now.
They dont pick up anything(dont take that as a knock on the magnet,
its quite strong). THey havent broken.
and they cost me 5 bucks including tax for the set.

You best read that post made by mafay a few posts up. If you cannot find that piece of magnet that broke off, chances are it is in the tranny inside ready to wreck **** up good....

Some of us aren't lucky enough to have pepboys around or autozone or wherever you can get these cheaper alternatives.....(Canadian/European members) so Spoon or wutever that is readily available is worth the additional cost for the added insurance.

For those who say getting the mag. tranny plug is useless because the casing already has a magnet have NOT actually seen what this additional drain plug magnet can pick up.

Here's a question..... what happens when that magnet inside the case has been overloaded by attracting metal debris? If any of you have actually opened a tranny, you'd see that magnet is almost always sludged up so badly that I'm willing to bet it renders it next to useless after a certain number of miles.

This is compounded by the fact if any of you use an aftermarket clutch pack LSD....

Support the Honda-Tech sponsors and SEARCH in the "Performance" forum for "magnet" and they'll be a number of vendors willing to sell you some nice magnets.
