Default WANTED - Fiberglassing pics/instructions

Does anyone have any pics or instructions on how to do custom fiberglassing for a sub box and/or pics? I would like to do something and have only found one instruction thread about it. I want something that looks like semi-circular bubbles around the subs. Thanks

I have worked w/ fiberglas many times. It is pretty easy to do, but requires time and patience. Sounds like you are gonna make a custom Sub box? Are there irregular curves and corners? To get the fiberglass to flow around these go to Home Depot and get some sandable foam panel(s)/sheets. Cut them to a rough shape and glue together. Then sand down to the shape you want. Lay your fiberglass over the "mold" (make sure to use a "release" agent so the glass doens't stick to the mold). You will want to make the thickness of the sub enlcosure around 3/8" or more. For the flat area where the driver will sit - use a piece of MDF - fiberglass is not as strong for flat surfaces as it is for irregular curves/shapes.

Once the glass has cured - sand down to remove the and bumps or screwups. Then lay some body filler, then sand that. Carpet or paint as you see fit.

This is just a real basic set of directions. I suggest if this is your first time playing w/ fiberglass, do a "practice" turn w/ a plastic bowl or something. You'll have to get the feel for how much want to mix (resin + hardner) to cover the area you want to glass. Put too much hardner in the mix, and you will get a faster cure time. Not enough hardner and you will be waiting a couple of hours for it to cure.

Hope this helps!

you know whats a good fun first project is a cardboard box, the oen your sub comes in. Get some fiberglass mats, thats the inter woven white stuff. lay down a nice coat of it, place the mat over the resin + harder mix. Then make sure its nice and soaked threw, the most anyone thing is thoose little strands of the mat that sticks up.. thoose are like thorns.. make sure to have a clean, flat surface.

if you want to prevent the glue from sticking to floor of your hatch, use aluminum foil, layered, the glue wont stick to it....

you can use fiberglass for everything. Its not as hard as everyone makes it out to be. Buy the mat, buy the resin, and mix it in proportion. its easier though to start on paper plates, boxes, etc. Once you get the hang of it, its easy. ill post some pics of my trunk im in the middle of glassing.

Check out http://www.rtol.com/scornell for a good article on how to really make fiberglass panels and such. I know this guy personally and I believe he is one of the best.

So let me get this right. If you want to fiberglass a box into your spare tire well you would want to follow these steps:

1. Lay some sort of material down that the resin will not bond to on your trunk or spare tire well floor.

2. Mix up some resin and start to apply it to the floor of your ride.

3. Lay the fiberglass fabric down over the resin once applied.

4. Let the stuff dry then sand to get out imperfections if you want then add some body filler and get the results that you want.

Is that basically how you want to do it or am I way off?

2. and then from there did you just add coats of clear coat? from spray can or other method? thanks for the info...

Hey - could you guy elaborate on how you got the molded "bubbles" (for lack of a better term) to pop up around the speakers? The more detail the better as that is the biggest part that I do not understand. Did you make a mold first or something?
