Default 96 civic ex short shifter question

I just bought a new short shifter and i've never had one before. I read a bunch of posts about how they can ruin your tranny and can easily pop out of gears, the posts discouraged me from putting it in. So i'm wondering if its worth it to put one in, and do you think its neccessary for me to get energy suspension shift stabilzeres to have smooth shifts. Mucho Gracias.
