Default pros and cons of ls/vtec turbo?

i have a b16 in my crx, and i was gonna put a semi built b18c block in place of the b16. i can get the stuff to do a ls/vtec much cheaper, and there's a good chance it will make better power.

are there any reasons i shouldn't try the ls/vtec and go straight to the gsr block, or will the ls block be fine.

If your gonna sleeve and and go all out, you will make more power out of a gsr block.

if both blocks are fully built i highly doubt a c1 will make more power than a Ls block.

Ummmm yeah it will. Better R/S ratio for high HP. The LS block will give better torque though.

If I'm not mistaken rod:stroke is for reliability, not power. If it was everyone would be running B16A2s and not B18Cs.

thats what i thought. fully built LS/VTEC vs. fully built GSR wont be much of a diff performance wise.

If your gonna go to all the work putting together a sleeved turbo ready block, I'd start with the GSR or ITR block firstoff. You will have the intergral Vtec feed line, main cap girdle, oil cooler, etc. instead of adding those things to an LS or CRV block. Just my opinion.

I have a sleeved LSVT-turbo now, but if I was to do it over again I'd have started with a GSR or ITR shortblock.....which in fact is the base for next season's bottom end.

Yeah the GSR comes with the goods minus oil cooler, but I'd add that to my block later. Really though EVERYONE AND THEIR MOTHER knows the GSR block is the "ish" , i wanted the LS torque so i bought an LS. We'll see how great the rod:stroke works hopefully shortly.

"Reliability"...?

It is true that this will effect reliability, however most people don't run the B16 just because of it's deplacement. The B18C has a great reving R/S ratio, and also has the capability to be a large displacement motor. THAT is why the B18 is prefered of the B16.

There is nothing wrong with a LS/VTEC setup. It's just that a big bore B18C will have the capability for overall higher HP.

The fastest street honda to date(littleblucrx w/ 9.89 @ 150) was running a 2.0 LSvtec. worked good for him.

But I too would choose the gsr motor for simplicity sake. It comes w/ all the goodies stock, can rev higher, good displacement. but in the end the LS just has that extra displacement which doesnt hurt.

You get your torque sooner on the ls/vtec, and they tend to die up top. It has to do with the piston speed. You move alot more air with the ls/vtec since the piston is traveling faster than the gsr block, if you open up the head it shouldnt be an issue. You'll gain 33cc displacement over the gsr block. Personally I'd go with the gsr blocks since they have factory oil cooler, girdle and oil holes line up with the vtec heads. There have been issues with people getting the blocks to seal up once their rebuilt, not entirely sure if its due to user error.

Just bore it out....well then again this is FI you don't want to do that......how bout a bare DART block......ever look into that.....It's closed deck and you can probably make that into a 2.2-2.5 liter i'm not sure...and just slap the b16 head on it....and voila. DART blocks aren't that cheap but fzuck that's a hella lot more cc's....on a closed deck...woo hoo

I thought the B18C 5 was the only B series to recieve the oil cooler treatment, interesting though.

Certain years came with the oil cooler. I have had two gsr blocks with them on, and three that havent.

94-95 gsr's have the oil cooler stock and its coolant hose setup is different from the current b18c5 as well.

I too am running a LS-VTEC turbo set up. So far I Love it and its been good thus far. If I were to do it all over again I would choose the B18C1 block simply because its made to rev a lot higher than the B18A. Just my $.02
