Default Relocating the dimmer switch?

I've taken my dash apart in the past and remember that the dimmer switch is pretty big. Its atleast the size of the Cruise Control switch, reaching about 3-4 inches toward the front of the car behind the dash. I've also taken the switch apart in an early idea to install a light in it which I immedietly tossed after seeing the electronics behind the switch. It isn't just a potentiometer.

In the helms manual its refered to as the "Dash Lights Brightness Controller" with a "Control Circuit" including some diodes and resistors.

Has anyone attempted to relocate this switch?
Has anyone do any further research on how it might be possible to stuff the switch in the dash, but still retain its function?

do you mess w/ the dimmer switch that often ? if not you can leave the switch plugged in and tuck it behind where the hole was in the dash board . i did this when i put a autometer 2 1/16 gauge in that spot .

you can always cut and extend the wires to relocated it where ever you want

When D installed cruise control on his R he put the switch (oem) down near the trunk release area. he just extended the wires.

How did the autometer gauge fit in that spot? nice and snug or did you have to modify it somehow? I might do this if it's a perfect or close to perfect fit.

the hole is smaller then the gauge , i used a dremel to open up the hole to make it fit

yes, thats the obvious solution, but I dont really have another location for a 2 inch round button...i want to get a little potentiometer and stick it some where out of sight but still be able to use it

I drive around with my lights on during the day and it annoys me if I can see the guages and everything backlit...besides, its better to dim them down, its gotta be...

I just leave the dimmer in the space behind the hole and have my oil pressure gauge mounted in its spot. I'll post pics if I get a chance to take a picture of it

Relocating the switch is as easy, just extend the wires to where you want.

To remove the dimmer switch altogether and have the dash lights function at full bright, connect the red wire and the black wire together.

then you have the problem of having to find a new location for this huge 2 inch diameter switch that has a huge bulky button and some electronics behind it making it reach 3-4 inches.

I got hella bored today and relocated mine.

I had a measuring/clearence problem with the ABS plastic and closing the glove box at first. So I had to cut a little of the bottom an not use the bottom screw.

The back of the dimmer is held in by some liquid moldable ABS, that way it wont rotate, when I try to turn the switch in some direction. The red and black button are just there so that the dimmer isn't lonely and I had some spares (momentary buttosn - good for Nitrous!).

It closes perfectly now and you'd never now it was there.

I just got my rear wiper plug from the dealer today, and I'm about go go install that. I'd go put a guage where the dimmer was, but my dremel is busted!!!

Sure thing man.... Pics will have to wait till tomorow tho. It's 12am here in GA.

1.Extend the dimmer switch wire to the glove box location
2.Find some sort of material to use as a face plate for that glove box panel. I used ABS plastic. I think it's 1/8 inch thick. NOTE: It will not touch the other end. Your glove box will not shut.
3. Screw it in at the top.
4. Drill a 1" hole in the left corner of the glove box to all for wires to be inserted
5. Drill a small hole in the ABS plastic where you want the dimmer switch to go
6. Pull the dimmer switch **** and bezel off. Bezel will be kinda hard so work slowly.
7. Put the dimmer behind the ABS plastic and the **** in front.
8. Go ahead and set the brightness and rember the location of the back of the dimmer
9. Tape the back of the dimmer or use liquid ABS to the faceplate so that it does not rotate when you adjust the ****.
10. Reattach all the stuff and mount.

YOU ARE DONE.

(pics coming soon)

Im doing a custom bezzel for other guages, the mass produced bezzels are terrible, they cover the side guages half way when they really shouldnt...Im going to mold in my guages...

P1mpSlap -- Nice work, how many wires did you have to extend in order to complete this?

If your going to leave it dangling in the back of the dash, you might as well remove it altogether. Connect the red wire to the black wire. And it will be set to the max brightness. I dont know about you, but I never use the dimmer switch and leave it at full bright.

I just extened the dimmer switch wires. So just three total. I moved the entire harness connector over.

Damn I still forgot those pics. Sorry guys.

actually I just thought about that today.

When I get mine in I'm gonna experiment with it. Right now I just have a hole there.
