Timing Question
ok here is my problem. my y8 EK is out of time and the little marks on the crank pulley are worn off so no shop will do it. i thought that i might slightly adjust it myself till it sounds better, but i have a few questions.
my car is out of time and stumbles from time to time has no power and everything else is fine...so that would mean basically its running behind the correct time right?
and if i am correct which direction (clockwise or counter) do i turn the cam once i loosen the tensioner pulley to get it closer to the correct time. i dont think its out of time real god awful bad cause it doesnt sound like it is...
any help you can provide would be great. also i have already tried replacing the crank pulley with one that would allow me to use the timing gun and everything but i cant find one on any wrecked cars at junkyards and no one has any spare parts around here....HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!

are you talking ignition timing or valve timing. im gonna go with ignition if you are going to use a timing light. so do this take out the #1 spark plug and turn the crank till you can see the piston go all the way up. or better yet put in a screwdriver or if your worried about scratching the piston use a straw or something. and when you see the screwdriver go all the way up and not go down at all, then its at top dead center.
now find the little notch on the plastic cover behind the crank pulley. the one you set timing by. mark right under that, engrave a little notch on it then put some white out on it.
now set timing as you regularly would.

thanks for your help but my next question i am going to feel stupid for...whats the diffence in ignition timing and valve timing...how do i know which one i need to adjust...maybe i dont need to worry about a timing gun at all...someone help i feel very STUPID

There is a line on the crank end (with the crank pulley off)..
First of all, what motor do you have?
And what you mean i'ts a little out of time? The timing marks should be good unless it has jumped a tooth.
The engine spins counter clock wise (looking from the timing side) and clock wise from the distributor side.
Please be more specific bro.

Cam timing is timing of the cam (to open the valves on a specific time). Timing light has nothing to do with the cam timing. Only ignition timing.
Ignition timing is when the spark plugs spark. If you turn the distributor at all (looking at the distributor), this advances/retards the ignition timing.
Turning the dist towards the radiator support retards the timing.
Turning towards the firewall advances the timing.
HTH.

i have an automatic D16y8
you use a timing gun to get the ignition timing right correct?
how do you get the cam timing right?
also, how do you turn the crank pulley easily, is there anything in particular that needs to be done? i plan on doing this here in just a little while when a friend gets home and use his garage.

correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the timing marks already engraved into the crank pulley? If so, then even if the color has worn off you should be able to find the etched lines, right? You need to try to do this, because the screwdriver in the cylinder trick is not very accurate. There is a few degrees of rotation at the top and bottom of piston travel where the piston does not appear to move.
You set the cam timing by lining up the marks on the crank pulley and the cam gear.
Actually, you can't use the screwdriver trick to find the timing marks. That only helps find top dead center (TDC). The timing marks should be a little in front of the TDC mark, since the spark plugs fire 16 degrees before the piston reaches the top of the cylinder.

i will check into that tonight...

where are the marks suppose to line up? i mean i have no prior experience doing this much just basic knowledge...how would i know if the correct marks are lining up in the right places???

OK dude save yourself some trouble. take the valve cover off and take the t belt off. There is a lil hole on the end of your cam (well there is on DOHC) and line that up so that you can see straight down it to the hole below that. way easy and you know for sure that it is set right. as for ignition timming i dont know im to tired to re read your post. good night

I was talking about the marks being etched onto the actual crank pulley (the red timing marks and the white TDC mark). At TDC #1 cylinder, the white mark on the crank pulley is supposed to line up w/ the indicator on the lower timing belt cover. The cam gear should have the UP indicator pointing up, obviously, and I believe there are 2 marks on the gear that line up with the top edge of the cylinder head. Depending on what year engine you have, there might also be a little pointer below the cam gear which lines up with another mark on the gear (all this is for SOHC).
