Because when the car's not moving, there's not much air moving thru the radiator. You should see the temperature gauge move up somewhat, then the radiator fan starts to run & it comes back down. But how high does the gauge go?

If it goes into the red, then its too much. Fan switch, wiring, relay, or fan motor itself could be bad... Got a repair manual?

Hey whats up
theres a couple things to look at.
Radiator cap,
thermostat,
belt to the water pump could be loose
the radiator itself
try those first

If your car is sitting idle for 5 to 10 minutes, the radiator fan is supposed to turn on to suck in cold air to cool off the radiator.

Sounds to me the cooling fan is not turning on. What you need to do is to make sure the fan is working properly. Simply hot wire the fan by sticking a wire from the positive wire on the fan to the battery and see if it turns on.

Also make sure the other wire on the fan harness is grounded properly. If it does NOT turn on, you will need to replace the fan. If it does turn on, then the coolant temp switch in the thermostat housing is bad and not sending the signal to the ECU to turn on the fan switch.

HTH.

It's probably your coolant temp sensor located under the distributor. I had that problem three times. On two of the occasions, my temperature went 25% higher as soon as I turned the heater ON.
