Default Heat Removal?

I was at the track and my buddy whos got a blown GT leaves his heater on but the car off while he's in line to run. Says it cools the engine down? I thought the heater core was separate from the engine? So is he just retarded or is he actually cooling his engine?

With the engine off it will only cool the tiny amount of water in the heatr core proper. Its a waste of battery.
