Default What do they use to shield wires?

I had to ghetto rig my eq that i found in my brothers room. I just wanna hook it up and see if it works. And i had to use these rca cables and cut them and hook them up. But i'm getting a humming and squaling and ticking nose. so i was wondering what they use to shield rca cables so i could try to shield them . haah sounds pretty stupid but is there anyway of shielding wires?
Thanks

Sometimes shielding makes the problem worse. Before you start spending money, did you recheck the connections? Double check the ground? Maybe it's the EQ, why was it in the closet?

it was in the closet with an old alpine alarm that my dads worker gave my brother. so i thought i would try to hook it up. Its a alpine 3210 7 band graphic equalizer with 2 amplifiers. i donno if its any good i might just throw it out. or keep it in my room hooked up to my brothers old sony deck that recks cd's. but it would be nice to hook it up in my car.
