Blowing Smoke... how do you know when rings are shot or something else?
Just wanting to know how to diagnose if my piston rings are out, or valve seals need to be replaced, or what1?!?!? I have never over reved the car.. only once did I accidently rev it to 7k when cold.. but drove it after that with no smoke.
My car is blowing white/blue smoke.. smells like burning oil. Sparks plugs are fouled. black with oil on them. I did a compression test and found them to be 215-210-210-210. What are my next steps? since compression is decent, I would suspect the valve seals... in anycase, let me know what you think and why.
This is a b16a in a 90 hatchback
TIA
Andrew

Your compression rings can be good, but your oil rings can be shot. When you go down a hill, then accelerate, does it blow a clowd? Thats what my old civic engine did. I swaped it out, I didnr know if it was the rings or the seals though. Ryan

well it takes a while for the smoke to appear.. car gets warmed up and then keeps coming out.. even at idle there is a bit of smoke. (looks like if the weather was cold and the condensation and heat from the exhaust)

my car would smoke after it warmed up. im doing a headgasket on it.....i think blueish smoke is the rings though and grey is headgasket. in anycase its some work....and costly if you cant do it yourself, head gasket is SO simple. and if you dont have MPFI its the perfect time to add it like im doing haha.. but if its blueish it is probably the rings....atleast thats my 2cents
well the easiest answer to this is to change the rings, headgasket and valve seals.. but I dont have the time to do all of that.. if it is just the seals, I would just rip apart the valvetrain... if it was the head gasket, then I would have to do the same.. I am just trying to narrow down the problem from these three things...
