i hear a rattleling sound from under my engine... what is it??
Well.. when i have the car at idle, the car makes this weird rattleling sound.. then as soon as i step on the clutch it goes away... the noise seems to be coming from under the engine.. either the tranny or near the cat.... im not sure.. but do u guys think that the cat might be lose??? but why does the noise goes aways as soon as i step on the clutch.. it only makes the noise when im at idle.. the car still drives normal, no other problems...
can anyone help??
thanks

Just grab stuff and shake it. Could be a heat shield for something. Mine makes a funny sound like that too. I'm suspecting that it is just the loosness in the throwout bearing when you don't have the clutch depressed.
Of course, it is hard to say without hearing.

Turn on the car and poke the cat converter with a broom stick or something, if your rattling stops then you know its because of loose heat shields on the cat. Just take them off or get some ring clamps to hold them down.

It could also be the cat itself, i had a similar rattling sound and i could not figure out what it was for the life of me, so when i was doing the swap i took the cat off, and when i pulled it off large chunks of the catalyst fell out of the cat. After time the **** inside breaks down, so thats prob what your rattling sound is.

First thing i will do tomorrow morning is check if everything is tight with the cat... but one question still remains... why does it go away when i step on the clutch??
Because the noise is inside the tranny--bearings baby. My old trans did that. Highly doubt it is your cat cause you say it stops when the clutch goes down, meaning the bearings stop spinning.

I drove with bad bearings for 80k...so dont worry. But have it looked at to make sure that is exactly what it is. What u can do to try to quiet it a bit is drain your trans fluid and put in a really thick oil, see what happens. Can u explain it a little better? Oh yeah Breaka ban this rebel schmuck.
sounds to me l;ike the release bearing. Mine is doing the exact same thing right now, and i got a release bearing from Honda 80 Canadian, but a whole lot of money to put i in. Just going to wait to get a new si tranny instead of dx
