Default Rev Limiter on R

When hitting the rev limiter on the R at 9000 rpm, does anyone feel a kick when shifting in to the next gear? Can anyone tell me why it does that and is it safe to take it up to 9000 rpms?

the rev-limiter is 8400 rpms. The stock tach is off. Dont bounce off the rev-limited, you'll end up like some of the other fellas on H-T with blown motors.

Boba- who feels sorry for all that have to have motor work done.

Boba,

I used to shift at the indicated redline (8400 rpm). where is the actual correct point to shift (indicated)?

Nope, redline is 8400 rpm, but the revlimiter doesn't kick in until 8700 rpms.

And like Boba said, the tach is off a little.

Your shifts for optimal acceleration should be just prior to the rev limiter, so figure out where it is (on the goofy tach) and shift just before bouncing off of it. If you're not missing shifts and over revving or downshifting to the wrong gear it's okay to run it out that far.

it can, but i wouldn't recomend it everyday. i think honda is looking from a reliability stand point by giving it 8400 rpm.

Im shifting right at redline indicated. You arent really gaining any horsepower after 8100 on a bolt on type R.

Boba- who shifts at 8k when Spraying the Nitrous.

There's a torque multiplication issue you forgetting about here because of gearing. I completely agree the motor is making less hp after 8K, but it's advantageous from an accerleration standpoint to at least run first all the way out. Second, third, and so on, you don't have to wind out quite so far.

Yeah...i just got used to shifting in the R- what is the best shift points for day to day driving? Someone commented that I let the revs get too high before I shift...but I'm still under 4K each time. Also, how do you get a quick start on the R? Should I start on 1st and let it run out and then shift to second?

I've found that shifting at about 8600 rpm in second gear and above is just about best at the strip. Getting that in 1st gear is pretty hard as the car is accellerating pretty fast and it's hard to watch it closely. I have taken it to 9200 on several occasions at the strip and occasionally on the street. That's not everyday + everytime I'm in the car though. So far it's held up pretty well.

I also forgot to say that I found the tach in my car to be pretty accurate. Now I have a little different situation though. ITR motor in a Civic. I found that with the tach on the dash and the VAFC tach, they are almost the same. Maybe off by 100 rpm or less.

"Red line" is manufacturers way of keeping you off of the rev-limiter.

Red line is 8,400 because that is where they put the mark on the stock tach, fuel cutoff id at 8,600 (indicated is different and depending on the car, mine was at about 9,000).

Rick - who knows the fuel cutoff was definitely at 8,600 based on the 40+ dyno runs he did ..... :D
