D15 vtec...vx motor

D15 vtec...vx motor
So yeah I just got one of these beauties for free 
My g/f has a 91 civic dx sedan. I know the vx is the super mileage car and was under the impression that the vtec is "special" in some ways and that its not totally like the 1.6 d series or b series.(meaning..not as good or used differently..dont know where i heard it but im here to confirm and or learn )
am I right or wrong?
Would it be worth swapping this motor over to the dx for a little more pick me up(or is the stock dx better than this thing?) or should I just make a "go kart" and boost it
any help , tips and comments are welcome!
