cv boot damage
hey guys had a question and need to ask for opinion... my inner and outer cv boot on the right side. what will be cheaper or better for the car.. replacing the cv boots or replacing the axle.... thanx in advance
sometimes if the damage inside the axle isnt too bad or just a tear/crack on the boot and still be able to utilize your axle, shops will not charge much for this to be repaired.
best thing to do is to establish a good relationship with a honda specialist so when small things like this occur you wont get charged that much for the repairs.

My brothers Integ, which is now mine had a broken cv boot a while back. Took it to an Acura specialist and they repaired it pretty cheap. I think they just replaced the piece, don't know anything about the axel though.
I just got done replacing mine like an hour ago. A boot kit will cost you about $35 from the dealer. An replacement axle will cost you anywhere from $95-$150. If you know what you're doing, it would take you 1.5 - 2 hours. That's with the real boots not the 2 piece cheap ones. It can be a bitch though to replace though.
I drove around for a couple months before replacing it. You should be fine. Dirt will get into it but just clean it out real good when you replace to boot.

If the damage to the boot is a tear and the grease is leaking out... it is possible for dirt and grime to get inside the boot... this is likely to damage the inner bearings (think sandpaper on a surface that should have grease) If this happens you would want to replace the whole axle. Otherwise, the boot can just be replaced if no damage is present.
The longer you drive on a sliced boot, the more likely dirt will get in and do some damage. But it's ok to drive on it if you need to...
