Default why is it harder to replace cv outer boot than axle?

my civic '97 lxsedan needs cv outer boot replace and i do not want honda to do it cause they are charging me $$$$$$. n e ways i keep reading that its better and easier to replace axle rather than just the cv boot. why is that??? i mean those boots are cheap and i don't really wanna spend more then i have to on the axles if changing the boot is no grief on my side. oh this place is great by the way.

Just replace the axle, you never know if a bit of dirt got in there. It's easy/cheap enough to do and you'll know everything is cool.

ya, its better to just replace the axle because when your cv boot is ripped open to the air, you dont really know how much dirt and any other stuff got inside..and just changing the boot wont really fix the problem because your just covering it up with the dirt still inside..so its better to just fix the whole axle..

what the hell is that Core value thing?? does it mean i need to give them my old axles and they will refund me back the core value?

basically, you buy the axle from autozone..install it in your car, take your old axle back to auto zone and they will give you money back for it.good deal eh

Boots are cheap, but it is never just a boot. How many miles did you drive with the boot torn? Plus to do it right you need to buy the boot, the bands for the boot, the special tools from Honda, the right grease and that is it assuming you didn't damage the joint with some sand. When it comes down to it, it is just more frustration then simply buying some cheap lifetime waranty ones. Imagine if you do all that work and then you did something wrong and the boot breaks in 1,000 miles.
