If you car is on the original timing belt, I would DEFINITELY suggest changing it.
Here are some How-to's:
B18C Valve Adjustment
B18C Timing Belt Replacement
Also, if you don't own a Helms manual already. Go get one.

I don't recommend doing the timing belt yourself. It's not as easy as what other claim it to be. Just look for a smaller independent repair shop, most can do a timing belt/water pump for around $350 and offer some sort of warranty, like a few months. You might also want to check your PCV valve too.

easy, get a feeler guage, take your Valve cover off, then when a cylinder is at top dead center, lets say #1, then the intake valves on cylinder #1 should have a clearance of .06mm (between the cam and the rocker), and im not sure if its #3 or #4 that the exhaust vlaves will have the same reading. usually when one cylinder is at tdc, there is another cylinder at its tdc between its stroke 2/3.
1 stroke is intake
2 stroke is compression
3 stroke is detonation
4 stroke is exhaust.
i think. but anyway, its pretty easy to do, your better off looking at a book, its hard to explain. ill scan em, and post em here.

don't forget your wiper fluid,
and a timing belt/water pump including installation shouldn't cost anywhere near 800, i had mine done at a local shop (used genuine Honda OEM belt and pump) and it cost $400 Canadian... so around $275.
