Default Corner Balancing Not required?

So I just got off the phone with a shop here in town that sets up cars for various styles of racing. I was inquiring about corner balancing. He asked the car and if i had coil overs on it, then asked what kind of sway bar links I had. I told him non-adjustable, he said "no need to cornerbalance it then". I asked why, his reply is as follows:
"Since you always do corner balancing with the driver in the car and have to disconnect the sway bars so that there is no preload from the driver's weight, when you connect the sway bars back up, if they are adjustable you set them for 0 preload. Therefore, if you don't have ajustable sway bar end links, no need to corner balance the car"

Your thoughts?

I would still corner balance it.....but get some adjustable endlinks as soon as is reasonable.

Preload is bad, but not bad enough to completely cancel out proper cornerweights.

so if I got some scales that had a margin of error +/- 20lbs, and set it up for now, thats better than nothing, right? Who makes adjustable endlinks for the R?

I am planning on cornerweighting my R this weekend and this is the first I have heard about something like this. I knew it was important to disconnect the sway bars, but I didn't think that hooking them back-up negated anything you do.

He is correct, in that swaybar preload will have an effect on corner weights. Corner weighting shoudl take place with the bars disconnected, then the bars set to 0 preload when reconnected.

What type of endlinks does the R use? On my RX-7, the links are a vertical bolt, surrouded by polyurethane cylinders, running from the bar to the control arm. By changing the length of the polyurethane blocks, I can alter preload.

The ITR uses two types.
The front: #6

The rear (not as clear)

Not much room for adjustment really.

There are alot of things that effect corner weights, which you might not have control. Just about all the rubber bushing in the suspension, if not normalized to the ride height, can effect weights. With street suspensions you do the best you can.
In a situation were the swaybar has non-adjustable links, corner weight the car with swaybars unhooked, then hook everything back up, see what happens. Sometimes you can put spacers under the mounts and adjust things a bit. I think its always a good idea to corner balance. When a customer brings a ill handling car into my shop, getting the weights right is usually the biggest step in getting their problems solved.
