Default crankshaft pulley bolt?

I am going to be changing my timing belt very soon and I was looking over everything and was thinking about achieving the 159ft/lbs on the crankshaft pulley bolt. Won't the engine turn over while you’re trying to tighten the bolt? Or do you leave the pins in by the cam gears? Any advice on tightening/loosening this bolt would be appreciated.

Put it in gear to keep the engine from turning. If the front wheels are off the ground, get someone to step on the brakes, or wedge a 2x4 between the brake pedal and the front seat. Do NOT try and hold 159ft-lbs with the cams. Impact wrench is another option, but I hate buzz guns.

Okay, I was thinking it would be really bad to do that but it didn't mention anything in the helms about how to do it.
Thanks!

Don't use an impact to tighten the crank pulley bolt.

Don't ever use the impact to tighten your crankpulley bolt back on. Put the bolt back on by hand, then use a wrench to tighten it. You're going to have to use an impact to take the bolt off though.

On 2.3 litre (dunno if its the same), there is a tool that fits over the bolt w/ the hex nut fitting on the outside (like if you turned a socket inside-out), and then you can get a ratchet on the bolt. Some auto parts places rent tools, but not that one around here. Might sweet talk the guys at a Honda dealership or another shop that might have one....but a impact will take it off.

Oh boy now I can't wait to get at that bolt! Is it possable to get off without an impact wrench? I really was thinking it was going to be tough when I read that it was at 159ft-lbs but you guys are making it sound even more fun!

Thanks for the advice though!

Why can't you use an impact wrench to put it back on?

The quick "impacts" that an impact wrench puts on a bolt when tightening can cause a big mess. Not only can the bolt break in half (while stuck in the crank), but the crank itself can get damaged from the multiple strikes from an impact.

Get a crank pulley tool and use a torque wrench to tighten things down.

whos taken off thier crank pulley bolt with an impact? i tried alot of **** to get mine off and it wouldnt break loose. so finaly i posted in FI and another guy in orlando replied and said he had the pulley holder. so he came over and it broke loose within seconds. so dont even waste time trying to do other **** cause it wont work. get the right tool. oh yeah he got his from moroso.
I took mine pulley off with an impact. You probably weren't using enough air pressure. I used I think around 300lbs of pressure, may have been a little more, but really didn't mean to. It took the bolt right off though.

I took mine too off w/ an impact. But you do need one strong enought to take it off.

um.... whats all this with not using an impact to get the nut back on? first of all... i would like to see anyone torque something down to 153 lbs by hand. you need the tool to take the thing off, also to put the thing on. the crank will turn without it.
second of all.... if you break the bolt from over torquing w/ the impact your a dumb ****. only retards do that ****... you should learn how to use your air tools if you do that ****.

OH yea, Elkins911, can you measure your TQ w/ an impact, I dont think so, thats why you dont use it..

i know that moron. did you understand what i was saying? anyone who breaks bolts off with an impact doesnt know how to use tools. when a bolt is tightened, you dont keep hitting it with the impact.... thats how the bolts snap.
ask anyone who uses an impact alot. you start to get a feel of how much your gun torques **** down. give me anything to torque down with an impact, ill bet i can torque it down to alittle over or under 100 lbs.
anything past that is when you start using torque stick and **** to get really exact. the crank shaft pulley is meant to stay on though.... either the gun or the stick is affective. the gun is just alot faster and alot easier to use.

I have removed the crank bolt many times using both air (impact) and a breaker bar. Air is way easier, but if you don't have air then breaker bar it is. As was said before, have a friend mash on the brake as hard as he can while you break the bolt loose. I used a 1/2inch drive socket with a 12" extension, and then a 18" breaker bar with a pipe slid over top for leverage.

As for putting it back on, if the motor is out of the car (and the tranny is off), wedge a tool (allen key) inside one of the holes on edge of the flywheel. Turn the crank until it hits the block in a solid location. Then torque away. Then you can do it by yourself. If the motor is in the car, use your friend mashing on the break pedal again...
