Default Aftermarket Axles

After what happened to Jeff this last weekend, I checked out what's out there in terms of axles. Driveshaftshop.com has these stage 2 axles

This is our stage 2 axle it has an outer c.v. made from 1117 billet that is 50% stronger than the stock HONDA outer uses. Our race proven torsional tubular center bar torsionally twists 5-7 degrees. The tube keeps the axle bar from distorting under heavy shock loads. The harmful shock factor that breaks the drive train parts usually happens when the material is incorrect or the axle distorts and puts unequal stress on the joints. We have a custom 1117 billet inner c.v. housing that has a special tripod that is 3 times larger than the stock unit.We also use the ROCKFORD DURABOOT that is superior to regular rubber boots. It will handle higher RPM due to a more rigid material and will hold up better in higher temperatures. This axle was used by TEAM BERGENHOLTZ and others last year and is good for up to 325hp (conservative estimate , has had more) . $250 each side. (grammatically edited)
Kaaz driveshafts

Much stronger than the stock unit and cheaper to boot. Includes both inner and outer CV joints with heat treated steel shaft.?cost
Anyone ever tried these or any other aftermarket ones? I believe rebuilt ones are not as good but you can set me straight on that if I'm wrong.

cheers

Damn if I knew about eh raxles I would have got those. I can tell you from my own experience, if you drive hard, do not buy rebuilt ones. I have snapped four axels in the past year and finally bought all new shafts.

I personaly have the Vitek chromoly axles supposed to be stronger and lighter due to the chomoly, I just got them because my swap did not inclued axles, so if you have axles, and have not broke any yet dont waste money on an expensive unnessassary upgrade (but if you have POWER and are breaking axles left and right I would try the ones above they look like they can handle power.

I saw those Vtek's advertised in a NOPI add. How much did they cost you for both sides? I was considering buying those when I snapped my last axel but I didn't have time to wait for them since I had a race the next day.

I have the stage ones from Driveshaft, the axle is actually a little heavier than the stock ones, but if you open up the CV joint you can tell the difference in the tripod design and bearings in the joints.

It seems the big names use the Driveshaft Shop's axles like Bergenholtz, Bautista, and Tran. These guys are out there to win with a lot of sponsors to please so I'm sure they don't pick any company. For cars that make over 500 whp ...I hear as much as 730 whp...I would imagine they use the stage 4.

The tripod TRuST speaks of compared to the stock one

Here's the stage 3

$850 good for 500 hp (bigger chromoly outer CV than stage 2)

and the stage 4

$1200 good for > 600 hp . The ABS is in reference to the hub type you have so the shop can send you the correct parts not whether you run ABS or not.The heat treated, larger centerpiece is used in a stage 4 compared to the stage 3. The rollers on the stage 4 are solid. This is serious stuff ladies and gentlemen.

They did say that if you make < 325 hp but go for a tire height bigger than 25 in., then they recommend the stage 3 even though your all motor car makes less than the 325-500 hp figure...so for guys like Lip and Greg who make bigtime all motor power, these are the big ticket into the big dance.....no snapping axles...

cheers

USually Axles DONT break in the center they always break the end tips off in the tranny (I used to break them all the time...the end peices are usually easy to take out) I have only seen the actual axle twist but never snap in the middle...I hope they made the axle end tips stronger as well..

maybe that's why he just switched to these stage 4's?

I just heard Jeff snapped his axles at e-town and still did a 12.8 sec et...I still can't get over that.... so I figure I better do some research on what's out there. If you can suggest ones that don't snap that you have used and the power level you make that'd be great for the members here.

cheers

nah...broken pressure plate not axles on that run

and axles break on the outside not inside at the tranny. the outter joint or if your really torquing them then the shaft at the hub

Where is the breakage occuring on people wih aftermarket axels. Please list the brand and model and where the breakage occurs. I personally have broken the stock axels in almost every position. Inner joint, outer joint, inside the CV joint bearings. The most breakages have occured on the inner joint....

if your breaking the inner joint...i'd think your axles are either faulty or your suspension geometry is off. I only say this because wheel hop breaks axles. whats happening is the outsides of the axles nearest the hub are being jolted from one side of the car to the other and normally the outside joint will let go. If you look at these aftermarket axles you'll see that they beef up the outside joint and axle shaft
