Default building up a B16A with R internals, is it worth it?

hey guys, I have this dilemma, I dunno if I should consider going through with my plans on building up a B16A. It'd have CTR 0.25 over pistons, and CTR cams + valvesprings, and new bearings and pretty much new everything else all for $2800.

Would you guys go ahead and build up the torqueless wonder?? Help me guys pls!?

Why dont you swap in a B18c1 bottom end and then build from there. A GSR shortblock in good condition should only set you back $1000 or so, and you can sell ur B16a shortblock for $400 or so. The only other things you need are GSR bolts and belt.. Im pretty sure thats it. It wouldnt be torqueless then.

Poor Mans Type R =

*edit: I meant the only other things u need to make the block work are the belts and the bolts.. you'd need to get a new header as well, but you'll probably be getting an aftermarket one anyway, so no worries.

B16A head, Port and polish R internals and you almost have the same thing... excluding intake manifold, thorttle body... etc.

B16A block ... well thats another story ... it will still be a torqueless wonder unless you stroke it for an ungodly amount of money.

I forgot to mention for $2800 I will be getting a mild pnp on the B16A head too

But thanks for the quick replies so far guys, appreciate it!

What about stroking the B16A using a 1.8L crank (LS or B18C) and aftermarket rods + pistons? There's the rod ratio issue but shouldn't be too much of a problem with forged items (which should be stronger than factory B18C items). I believe JUN sells 1.85L B16A blocks using a similar concept and they're quite popular in Asia...

$2800 for a basically new bottom end and mild PnP sounds good... You also have the option of going with a .50 over piston, which is honda's max for stock boring. OR spend a few hundred more for a GSR block/crank and do the same to it...

hmm...the GSR shortblock and re-work is very tempting, problem is finding a GSR shortblock for myself

my main concern is reliability, so stroking the motor isn't really for me, although it has been suggested to use forged parts, but on the other hand money is an issue.

I'm just skeptical to as whether or not it's even worth dumping $2800 into a B16A, with R internals, that is my dilemma.

I just need enuff reason to do so, because for the money, I could probably buy a GSR motor and drop that in (after having sold the B16A).

Can you guys support the torqueless wonder?

So plans would be as follows....

1. Next to new bottom end (CTR 0.25 over pistons)
2. Spoon headgasket
3. Mild pnp head + 3 angle valve job
4. CTR cams and valvesprings

worth the hassle of $2800? More opinions pls! Thanks!

Higher CR, PnP, slight bore, cams, etc... dunno...would a B16B (CTR motor) be worth $2800 to you ?

Basically you'll be getting a B16B for the money if you think about it... most jdm bandwagon peeps would love that... but it still would be lacking torque....

Ok, just don't yell, "GAWD NO !" in my ear, ok ?

How bout this.... sell the b16, buy an LS motor and do the same rebuild, cept w/ your B16 tranny. An LS head w/ mild PnP will flow just as well as a b16 head.

Your plus for that... TORQUE !!! You'll spank b16's and b18's left and right.

Yep, IMHO i wouldn't run a n/a b16a in any car, they just don't have nough torque. then again i've never ran n/a b16a before so this is just my guess. ****, i'm complaining about lack of tq and mine is making 160 ft lbs at the wheels so what does that tell you about the torqueless wonder
b16a great for turbo, high reving
b18c great for turbo or (break out the credit cards) n/a
b20/vtec great for turbo
h22a great for turbo
see a pattern here

b16b is a de-stroked B18 block, not a B16a block. I say buy an LS block for $200 or so and go LS/VTEC.

Really ? Same deck height as a B18, but destroked to a b16, that sucks ! Since the B16 is same bore as a B18, do they just use a B16 crank in the b18 or what ? (Curious)

I didn't mention LSVT, cuz that would be a whole other ball game... he would need to spend a bit more money there.

going ls/vtec has been thought of, however, with the help of c-speed racing's calculator, I'll roughly get like a 12.3:1 compression and it makes me wonder if I can run on pump gas? I can get 94 octane here at best however....

and yes, ls/vtec is extra $$ for sure and built well it can be very reliable and deadly fast!
