Default K04 Turbo on an ITR

Im planning on building a "junkyard" turbo kit for my R. not looking for major power yet, just want boost. Current lack of setup is a simple K&N filter and the rear section of a 5zigen fireball exhaust...this will be changed. A friend of mine is upgrading his 03' Audi TT. He told me I can have his stock intercoolers (comes with two corner mounted intercoolers) and his stock turbo if i wanted it. The stock turbo on the audi is a K04 I think and pushes 12 psi stock on the audi. I dont know the trim or anything else technical, at least not yet, as i have only just begun to do my research on the audi setup. I only want to push about 5 psi if not less. Does anybody know if the turbo will still be efficient at such low psi? Im not too familier with Turbo setups yet, but want to learn. I've never seen anything but T3, T4 and T3/T4's on Hondas period, so I dont know if it will work at all! Thanks.

I cant help you on what size the audi turbo is but I'm sure somone will.

I am running a small turbo by today's standards and it works great for me. I got my turbo off a Chrysler LeBaron at a local junkyard. I will tell you honestly that if I knew then what I know now I would have just anted up and bought a good size T3/T4 new. The potential amount of money that you will have to spend to make the power of a well sized turbo will outweigh the amount you save from getting the turbo for free. I hope that makes sense. I thought I was saving money by getting a turbo for $64 but in the long run I will be spending the same amount as if I had just bout a new turbo.

that turbo pushes around 180 on a TT, so i guess it would be good for you, but remember the R has quite a CR, so be carefull overboosting and saying goodbye to your engine, be conservative and remember that fuel management is the KEY, don't be cheap on it.

I thought the TT came with a TO3 stock, you sure he's not getting a TO4 and replacing a TO3.

Anyway, i had an A4 and replaced the stock TO3 with a TO4 and it was good for ~270hp at 15psi. And I am sure it could have made more power.

The Turbo is actually off the 225hp TT Quatro. Im not sure if im correct on the turbo being a K04 or not, however, thats what he told me. The turbo he is replacing it with is a K16 I believe. I used to have the link, but lost it. The kit is like $9000. Crazy to spend that, but whatever!
GZERO - Thanks for the advise. The first thing i plan on purchasing is a Hondata s200 system, so that should help out, along with 440cc injectors, so on and so forth. I really dont plan on boosting over 5 psi, until i have some internal work done though.... I may just go with a new T3/T4 like scooter suggested, just hard to decline a free turbo!
Thanks for the advice!

grab it ansd sell it .
the only thing id be worried about with that turbo is if it can keep up with the revs of the itr.

yea youll stay at 5psi it dont always work that way

I know the temptation to go over 5 psi will eventually take over, but im sure i have the will power to stay at 5psi for a couple...hours...hehe.

i could sell it, but i would be ripping my friend off. If im not going to use it, ill let him keep it and sell it himself. Although, i think i will use his intercoolers, if i can mount them at least! Oh well...

the best thing you can do, is get it, and try it, if it doesn't work out tell him you be selling it on Ebay and you'll give him 50% of the price cuz you need the other 50% to change the flanges and stuff!!!

think about it, the audi is 1.8, your teg is 1.8, the teg revs a lot more and has a lot more compression, but if you are going to boost 5 psi is definetly ok, more than 8 i would think about it twice, but is good not worring about the turbo till is time to boost more.

BTW: get fuel pump too!!

thats true...i might do that. doesnt hurt to try....at least i dont think it does!
If the turbo cant keep up with the revs, would it hurt my R at all?

The stock turbo on the 1.8t is a K03 and are WAY to small to do anything with.

They spool at like friggin 1500.

The K04 is prolly what he is getting on his.

the K03 Comes with the 1.8 GTi, regular TT, some jettas, SEATS IBIZA and LEON, Audis A3 and some A4, the K04 comes with the TT that has 220 hp, which is a lil bigger, but not much tough.

you'l have to make a triangular loookin flange coverter tio t3 manifold for your honda/ac Turbo manifold, its just a hassle to modify a manifold or make a header, sell it and use it to buy a saab, or volvo turbo t3

edit: stupid wording
in other words, take the ko3 and sell it for like 100$ on vwvortex.com and buy yourself a t3 that will fit on a maxrev, rev hard, drag etc. manifold, instead of making the ko3 fit on of the honda manifolds i said before, which would require an adapter, or unless your making the, but either way the k series suck for big power

and once you have like 7 psi, your gonna want 12, then 20,
then you'll consider sleeving and 9:1, hondata etc

good luck tho

thats just it, the kkk have a triangular entry and you would have to go custom if you really wanted to make a k series fit, if you wanna cool, just giving you some pointers cause i didnt know if the guy expected the k series entry to be like a t series,

Thanks for all the information everyone.
The turbo is off of a 220 TT and is a K04. I had thought about the whole flange thing, but kinda figured a shop could just weld on an adapter...although im prolly wrong...Ill prolly take the advice to see if i cant find a T3 off a saab or volvo. If not, a T3/T4 off ebay or somthing.
Thanks all

TO4s get good money from 1.8T owners as they are a straight drop in with a chip. If you feel bad selling it just swap it for a T3/T4.
