Default Need help with JDM D16 swap = sluggish accel, poor gas mileage...

I just bought a 97 EX and the same day I threw a rod. I got an JDM D16 put in (the cheapest solution). I still have the original computer. Should this make a difference? I know the Us engine produced 127 hp. Is this true of the JDM? Also after this modification I only get 22 mpg, very sluggish acceleration, and my vtec just isn’t trying hard at all. Even for a bone stock civic it’s lethargic behavior doesn’t seem to make sense. I do have an Intake and a muffler, but that’s it! Somebody help me!!

JDM D16 = D16Z6 im assuming? Well the first problem I see (if it is a Z6) is that its an OBD-1 engine and your EX has a Y8 which is an OBDII engine I believe.

the only vtec d sieries engines in a 1.6 are the z6 and the y8. so i dont know how much extra you paid to get the same engine that is the same jdm as us specs. but anyhow i agree

so if it doesnt have the p28 like the obd1 92-95 vtec ecu then it wont work properly.

Check the photograph.

the picture shows a B16A engine, and where the stamp in the block is. Its very easy to see and is left of the exhaust manifold. It is like this on all honda engines.

OMG I've been hosed!!
I finally checked the stamp on the engine, and I did not find the D16.. instead it reads D15B!! What the hell is that! I was supposed to have the JDM D16 vtec for a 97 civic. The valve cover does say vtec on it. Can someone please tell me some info on the engine I have in my car?

ha. sorry man.. id go back to the place that gave u that engine.. the engine you were supposed to have is a 1.6 L you got suckered for .1 L of power... i dont know much about 1.5s but is there a vtec 1.5? i think there is .. EX or something..

ok i checked up on it and on my engine list page i found
--------------
92-95 Civic, Del Sol, D15B2, SOHC, 16 Valve, 92HP, 24mm Crank snout D15B 1.5 4 $395
--------------
it appears that the engine listed there dosn't even have vtec...?
all the other engines equipped with vtec say VTEC...
check out the site if you want.........

Calm down Calm down. There is no JDM D16z6. The D15b Vtec (thereis a non Vtec model) is the Japanese equivelent.and does put out the same amount of power as the z6. It is an OBDI engine though. It's a great motor and mine pulls really hard. But with the wrong ECU I'm sure it runs like ****. So you might want to sell it and get a USDM Y8. Good luck
