Getting crank pulley off...with engine out of car???
I have an engine on a stand and I discovered that we dont have a crank pulley tool, booooo. And yesterday I was trying to figure out how the hell I'm going to get it off. First i shoved some old rags in 2 of the cylinders, slapped the head back on, and was going to try to break the bolt loose like that...but couldn't that possibly bend the rods? Or at least put too much pressure on the crank in that position? I was also thinking about maybe putting some wood in between the crank and block...but I don't know about that either. Does anyone have any tricks on how to get the ****** off when the engine is out of the car?
its a trade secret..but..
Take the bracket that mounts from the bottom of the ex. manifold to the bottom of the block, and a 14mm short bolt...
Mount the bracket on the tranny end where the only 14mm bot hole is so teh bracket ends up between the teeth of the fly wheel and have at it... make sure some one holds onto the block while you crank away at it.. I use a 17mm, deep with 1/2inch breaker bar, with my jack pole as a cheater bar...
took of a SOHC ZC CRank pulley for the first time yesterday...
I broke two 3/8 breaker bars and a step down the previous day.. (Craftsman)
Thats why I suggsted the 1/2 breaker bar..
Now getting the crank pully off with the engine in the car is different story..

Damn, I think I might of threw away that bracket. Maybe I'll clean the block and just bring it to my work and zap it with a gun. But that's a cool trade secret.
I had this dilemmna not long ago. Since I had an engine hoist by my side, I put the engine in the back of my mom's minivan and went up to a local tire shop where I've had my car worked on before. Backed the van up to a garage and the owner zapped the nut off in like 5secs with a air gun. Easiest way I could possibly think of..
Think an air gun will be able to zap it off when it's JUST the block, no head or no flywheel? Or would it just turn the engine.

Damn I didnt think about that. That sounds like its gonna be a bitch.. if it comes down to it you could bolt the flywheel back on and do the old screwdriver in the teeth trick while using the air gun.
yes an impact gun will beable to break it loose. it uses the impacts to losen it. it will turn the motor a little bit but should take the bolt right off. i just did it 3 days ago. no head, block bolted to the engine stand. used a 500 ft-lb. if it doesnt work do something else and come back and try again, it might take a few tries.
edit: cant spell.

i have a d15 on my engine stand that i am pulling apart, and i needed the pulley for a swap, it was the last thing to go on to get the car runnin, so i put an old flywheel on the d15, bolted the engine stand right to the flywheel, got my little brother and his buff little buddy, hadthem grab hold of the engine and stand, and got a huge *** 1/2'' breaker bar, gave it a big *** tug, got it off, then blacked out from exerting myself too much.....it rocked.
leave your flywheel on and stick a short screwdriver into one of the holes and it should catch on the block keeping your pulley from spinning. Then hit it with the impact gun and it should come off.
