When I installed my cams I did what alot of people do and cut my valve cover to expose the cam gears. I also have the top plastic piece of the timing belt cover off as well. Is this bad in the long run? What about water and other things getting on the belt?
Knocks on wood!!!!!
I've had mine exposed for some time now.
But I hate to think what a flying rock could actually do.
Weary, but holding up.

Yeah... bad. Just about lost my belt that way. I heard something hit the bottom of my hood and found a cut in my belt. Had the b*tch towed home.

Personally, I would buy a cheap/used/etc. cover to cut and use for tuning, then reinstall my stock cover after the tuning was complete. Like hoodpins on a CF hood - cheap insurance.

just hope it doesn't jump the tracks which will result in some serious damage to the engine.
and yeah the only thing I would be worried about is rocks from the road lodging themselves into the timing belt area. for water I wouldn't be too worried but that's me.

I run without all the covers and havent had problems. I had one cover off before and something flew in and snap my belt. Hope this helps you out.
