Anyone Rebuild a D16a6
im doing a rebuild. all new stuff except sleeves. costs about 1600. but this is a performance rebuild, so that includes cam, springs, header, pistons, etc... I estimate about 200 crank hp. maybe less, most likely not more.
I just hit the 400 mile mark on my A6 rebuild.... and about 10 miles on my Si tranny rebuild.
lovin it!!! then again, I'm going from a D15B1 w/ a 4-speed.
I kept it mostly stock, old pistons, rods, crank... and didn't really do anything to the head (yet).
I shopped around, and by far the cheapest place to get the rebuild parts was http://www.importperformanceparts.net/ I just used their re-ring kit which has all of the top end and bottom end gaskets as well as new rings and bearings for $216.00 If I remember right, the machine work I had done ran me in the $150 range.

I'm in process of collecting parts right now, I estimate (including a used a6) 12-1500 including machining costs. it should be quicker b/c that includes a valve train set & web cam + cam gear. should be done in a month or so; i'll post more info upon completion. i decided this route b/c of cost, ease & the fact that it will be way reliable given the amount of new
honda parts that will be going in. i'm excited.

did you replace them? i'm assuming that you did a full rebuild w/ rods, pistons, bearings, honing, etc, etc, etc?
if your talking to me. no. i bought the car. it had no comp, in any cyliders. i was told the timing belt slipped. the guy didnt know what he was talking about really, he said it snapped, then slipped then yatta yatta. the car had sat for a year. got another head in good shape, tore it down (the head) and replace all upper seals and gaskets. didnt look like it leaked any oil. ran if for a weekend and changed the timing belt (the one that was on it looked fine, but changed it anyways because of supposid slip) so got new belts, fluids and running down the turnpike 70mph @3500 rmps. oil light comes on, i slowed down too look for a spot to pull over and clank...time for new bottem end. it still drives but didnt get it apart yet to access the damage.
edit: no bottem end work was done.

theres a kit somewhere online that you can get, has all lower gaskets plus new pistons, timing belt, timing kit, and oil pump for 329 bucks, it doesnt include head stuff just bottom end
I'm in the process of rebuilding an extra a6 in the garage, but I'm wondering if I should replace the rods and pistons w/ stock part also? I plan to do some road racing, and maybe squeeze a small 50 shot for drags...but mainly reliability for daily driving....do the rods or pistons take a **** after a while???
yes, replace them if you're doing a rebuild---cheap insurance & you're already going through the trouble of rebuilding why cheap out? you can use the teg pistons like i noted above to bump up the cr, but you'll probably need to run premium gas
