Default Spun Bearing?

What does it mean when you spun a bearing and how much does it cost to fix? I keep on hereing people say they spun a bearing and it's easy to fix, I haven't done it or anything, but just curious to know what it means and what would need to be fixed yadda, yadda.

i'm mainly just paranoid the motor I baught has a spun bearing.......

If you motor had a spun bearing you'd know it. You'd hear it, like a knocking sound that never really goes away, just gets louder.

It's relatively easy to fix, it's just time consuming and you need a certain amount of knowledge to do it...

The term "Spun a bearing" refers to the bearings not staying in place on the rod and actually spinning with the crank, as opposed to having a thin layer of oil between ther crank and rod and stating seated where it is supposed to...

Often times it's just easier/cheaper to just get a new bottom end from a wrecking yard, and not doing an overhaul....

.....Feel free to interject where I may have left anything out....

You'd have to actually tear everthing apart and begin to mic each and every bearing...all 8 rod bearings...So you're in for a long night, LoL

if a bearing spins in a honda, your basically fucked. You can inspect bearings from beneath the car with out removing the engine. Just simply remove the oilpan and start cracking on rodcaps with a 10 MM socket. theres a little more to it, but, thats the basics. From my experiences though, you can get a sohc long block for about 300 bux so its almost better to just replace than to repair. I didnt completly read your post but im assuming its an sohc motor.

good luck.

I can vouch for this b/c I've had this problem before....I have a D-Series and I spun a rod bearing in October of '01 and I had it rebuilt and about 3 months later it happened again...now I have a whole new motor....I wish I would have just gotten the new motor when it happened the first time b/c it was a waste of money to have it rebuilt....

can you be more specific about the sound a spun bearing makes.

I have a knocking noise, i think, but for sure a noise. I always thought this was b/c my dc ceramic headers has a crack at the welds. My noise seems to only happen when i put the car in gear and accelerate. If i just rev the engine, i don't hear the knock, or its not loud enough to hear. do i have a spun bearing? or its just the headers???

I said this in another post somewhere but the most accurate thing I can come up with is put a rock in a paper grocery bag close the top up and shake it around in there cept its about 10 times as loud.

The only other sound I can think of that matches it is smacking a metal shed with a stick.

hows that LOL

if you dont hear it when your just reving it up then im 99% sure its not your bearings. Although rod bearings will make more noise when under tq load, you would still hear them at idle.

It sounds like you heard the term spun bearing from someone who messes with V8's.

If your bearings are making a knocking noise in a honda, its mostly just worn bearings. Just a few small pen sized marks in a bearing will make a knock. Honda bearings can wear out from a lack of oil, to over heating. You can spin them, but it takes alot

On the other hand, exhaust leaks make more noise when under load also.

This actually sounds like something in your tranny, especially if it only does it when you put the car in gear. Is it an A/T or a 5 spd? If you had an exhaust leak, you'd hear a constant clicking noise, depending on how bad of a leak. And it would get louder at higher RPMs, as the engine pushes more air out of the block.

I'd have your tranny checked, or possibly some portion of your suspenion.

FYI, my 93 LX A/T 4 door does that too, I've determined it's in the tranny. But I don't race it or anything, and it doesn't affect drivablitity at all, it's just annoying.
