There's a small chip inside each key. The ECU recognizes 'its own' keys, & won't start without them. There has to be a way of programming new keys to the ECU, but I don't know the details.

For our '01 Saab, you have to have all your keys together at once. Dealer plugs in a TECH-II computer, & tells it to recognize your keys. If you left one at home, it won't work any more. I suppose Hondas are roughly the same.

Can you post what you find out? I bought a junkyard OBD2 P72 and just found out about the immobilizer a few days ago.

Lots of discussion about this on SaabNet.com with the basic idea that some dealers do it for free or real cheap, some dealers are jerks. Imagine that! It takes about 5 minutes to do it.

So you probably ought to call your dealer for their answer.

Tech-II is kind of like the Honda PGM-FI tester thing... It reads OBD-2 codes just like the guy at AutoZoned, but it also programs all the other stuff in the car like how the locks work. Some independant mechanics have Tech-II devices, so its not exactly a dealer monopoly.

I've "heard" Locash can remove the immobilizer feature from these ECUs.
