Default Are there any major problems with Sportshifts I should be aware of?

I am in the neighborhood for a 97+ Prelude. I've always owned 5 speeds, and I'm settling down a little bit and think it would be nice to have an auto for once. So, are there any major problems i should know about with the sportshifts? Thanks for your input. Also.......is the sportshift that much slower than the stick with a good driver? Thanks

I have not heard of any problems as far as sportshifts go but if you are going to drive it hard you should stick to the 5 speed. The honda auto trans just dont hold up to hard driving.
Before my 99 prelude 5 spd i had a 95 accord auto and a trans rebuild was about $2000 i didnt have at the time ---thank god for good credit---

Any problems yeah, they suck get a 5 speed. You'll get much more potential power out of the 5 speed.
And I bet I gonna get the response. "Oh what the hell are you talking about 4 speed short shift have the same power." Oh man can't wait to read a response like that.

they suck drive a 5 speed and also do some searching.. and youll see that they have an alarmingly high failure rate... the other day i saw some kind of petition on here trying to get honda to recall them cause they suck and break all the time.

serach for ss petition probably and youll see it

My neighbor had one (note the word "had"), a 2k1. He drove mine once, started selling me his parts and then traded his in (on a new Maxima) less than 2 months later. The list of problems with the SS tranny are many. Yes, the high rebuild rate, the failure to shift/properly or at all at times, high hp makes the SS fail even quicker, it's almost a .5 second slower than a base in the 1/4 (dynos will show that you'll lose 5-10% more through that tranny than in a base 5 spd), & hell they have 5 hp less to start with.

1st and 4th gears are damn near useless. The stall speed is too low in 1st to drag your *** off the line and you'll most likely fall asleep waiting to get into 4th gear VTEC as other cars fly past you at 120+ mph. Save that $3K you're gonna want to spend on a tranny swap later and get the base, or the SH if you're not gonna boost it. You won't regret it.

There's a lot of problems with them, there are recalls, err like if it fails really early you get another one. They are really not good.

I have to beatup my SS up within 3 years or 100,000miles, then I'm gonna try to see if the dealership will do a manual conversion for me. Do you think they would do it? TIA

Peace

Hey now, one can still dream about it!!! hehe, hopefully this teaches my mom to listen to my research instead of going on about how manuals are "dangerous" rrrright.

they would never switch to manual under warranty. too much work involved. Unless you own the dealership and can fudge the paperwork, or can pay them enough, which wouldn't be under warranty anymore and you'd be paying them.

hahaha thats funny... my dad said something kinda similar. "5spd is gonna get on your damn nerves when your in traffic... remember my supra? thats why i sold it" "if you ever get into a bad situation and you panic...manual can make it even worse" ....me-"but i still want a 5spd ..." dad-"either you get this car... or you can just keep your messed up 92 accord...your choice..."

PS: my tranny is starting to get stuck ..... stupid SS
