Default My cousin has a 95 Del Sol and 2K. What performance mods can he get?

He doesnt know much about tuning so he asked me to help him so here I am.

Hes really not into making the car a show car, he just wants it to be a little faster. What mods can he do to increse his HP. He only has $2000 to spend. I also think he has a VTEC engine, I could be wrong. I told him he could do an intake and exhuast but I dont think thats going to give him that much more HP. Can this car be chipped?

He wanted to know about turbos but I told him that will be more than 2K but you guys no more than me with these cars.

What about a short shifter? Are there any?

Can you also reccomend brands. I was thinking maybe a GReddy Exhuast.

Any help will help.

Thanks fellas.

It is totally up to him about what he wants, Don't let us make the decision for him and then him wind up hating us later for it. Tell him to go on EBay or something and do a search on stuff for his car. He will find plenty of stuff for it.

do you know if his del sol is the vtec model or the si model? both have vtec, but the vtec model has the dohc b16a engine. i think most folks around here would agree that an aem cold air intake is the best single modification he could make, if he wants it na. i think he should go for the standard of an intake, header, exhaust, then spend some money on a decent suspension. aem, greddy, apexi... are good companies with quality products.

edit: since it is an odbI engine, it can be chipped.

GREAT! Thanks man.

I was looking at that AEM CAI. Headers would also be a good idea, who makes em?

Also whats a good short shifter for the del sol?

CAn the VTEC handle Nitrous? How much? Does the clutch or tranny have to be modified for Nitrous and are they fine?

Thanks again for the info.

a good start would be:

AEM cold air intake
dc header
exhaust

a good short shifter is a skunk2 short shifter, the throw is really short.

as for forced induction, i dont know much about that stuff youll have to ask someone else about that

what kind of motor is it?

chipping the car is not worth it YET in my opinion, he would need a lot more work done to the motor for it to really help

you can ge tshort shifters on ebay for less than $50. If youre mechanically inclined, i came across a website where some guy built himself a CAI to the exact same specs as the AEM unit out of piping he got from JC Whitney. It ended up costing him only like $80. He painted it inside and outside with heat resistant paint and claims it runs cooler than the AEM. I havent tried it yet but im gonig to. anyway, the car he did it on was a del sol. i lsot the link but i do have the article so i can scan it if you want.

i personally think shortshifters are a waste of money. they can also be hard on your syncro's. some people love them, but i think honda makes great shifters already. that seems more like a "what else can i get for my car" mod. definitely not a neccessity. if he is going to get one, i would get a neuspeed, b&m or c's one. people have complained about cheap ones breaking. for headers, a 4-2-1 is better for mid-range power, while a 4-1 will give you more top end power, but will sacrifice some from the lower rpm range. i would look at dc sports, apexi, jg edelbrock, greddy, mugen, etc. i'm sure there are other great brands out there. just look for products of reputable companies and just stick to some rules:
buy cheap, buy twice. you get what you pay for.
i don't know much about nitrous. i really think he should do the engine bolt on basics and start his suspension first. maybe some nice or decent adjustable shocks (koni yellows or kyb agx's) and coilover sleeves (only consider ground control) or springs (h&r, eibach). he could get full blown coilovers (tein, buddy club, tanabe, apexi), but they're expensive and may be overkill for his needs. here are a few good online sources for parts:

i agree with that. chips seems to be more of an advantage with you audi/vw guys as a beginning mod. they don't do you much good unless your motor is BUILT! it's pointless to mess with fuel maps and raising the rev limiter if you can't make the power up there.

also, if it is the sohc, these mods aren't going to be mind blowing, but will still be lots of fun! you could buy a b16a for 2000: http://www.hmotorsonline.com/

edit: here's a link to the home-made cold air intake:
http://www.jdmfan.com/technical/perf.../custom_intake/

again, with the short shifters, you get what you pay for. i don't know how many threads i've seen with people complaining how the cheap ones break.

if its the sohc vtec which is prolly is, dohc's are somewhat rare, it could be though...for 2k i would get the greddy kit for 1500, add a bov for 200, and have a 2.5 exhaust made for 295, and use the rest for a 6-pack for the instal

If he has an Si model with the sohc VTEC, i would tell him to save up a lil more and swap a b18b or b18c1 both are good motors for del sol. Or like the guy above said u can get a b16a2 for 2Gs. I have a del sol Si and w/o forced induction or nitrous they wont be crazy powerul cars. Im planning on getting a b18c1 sometime but NEwayz. Im not capping on SOHC at all though (seeing as i have one) but like every1 else said, intake headers exhaust and suspension are the basics and that should be enough to burn all of his $2000. and btw, on the del sol!

BUT! If he wants to stick with the 1.6 litre beast then he can turbo. Edelbrock actually just came out with a turbo kit for the Civic EX motor(d16y8) which is also in the del sol si. Granted his is a 95 and could be a d16z6 pretty much the same motor. It's supposed to add 60% more power increase. Something like 170 hp at the wheels.

tell him he could do a B20Z swap with a gsr trans. for under 2g's and it will have the potential to do high 14's stock.

Mr.Sparkle is right with header intake. But w/ 2 g's go ahead, stay naturally aspirated and get some skunk2 stage1 or 2 cams w/ the right springs&retainers. You will love it. My bro did it and does not know how to act

Also, the del Sol's shifter is already short. Why waste money on replacing it? Doesn't seem worth it to me.

go to http://www.teamdelsol.com, i believe u will find a lot of useful info on there.

but if i had to grand i would get skunk2 exhaust, dc 4-2-1 header, cai, upgraded throttle body and skunk2/type r intake manifold, and with the money left over i would upgrade the suspenion. or you could just scratch all that and get a greddy turbo kit for the 92-95 civic ex and custom fit it onto your del sol
