Clutch to flywheel fitment issues, any help is a HUGE Help!
Engine: ZC - Tranny: ZC - Old clutch: ACT SS w/ Xtreme pressure plate, 12lbs flywheel. - New clutch setup: clutch masters stage I, kit.
Heres the delima: The old clutch setup was way too stiff for daily use, so I decdied to replace the clutch/press. plate. So yesterday I pull the tranny off and take the clutch off, and take the flywheel to get resurfaced. Get the flywheel back, put it back on and go to put the NEW clutch on ... but it WONT fit. The new setup is just a little too small. I was told to order the clutch for a 89 tranny(previous owner thought the tranny was an 89 tranny), but it turns out that I have a 90/91 tranny. The place I ordered the kit from is all the way in NJ, while I'm here in AZ.
Option #1: Send clutch kit back, wait to get new clutch kit back. (place waits til they get the clutch back to send new kit, shipping delay would be a pain since the car is in the middle of my friend's shop)
Option #2: Find a flywheel from a 89 crx(since that is what the clutch is for)(is this even an option?)
Option #3: Anything else you can think of?
Which would you do?
Also, since I have a 90/91 ZC tranny, do I order for a 91 CRX si? The place I'm ordering from told me to order the clutch for a 92+ SOHC engine. What is the correct clutch to order?
Thanks for any help, and sorry if this post is a little confusing.

88 tranny is diff
89-91 tranny is the same
only 89 clutch disks/pressureplates will fit on 89 flywheels they ususally don't have a sprung hub they will have bushings.
90-91 disks/pressure plates will only fit 90-91 flywheels they have the sprung hub.
you can use a 90-1 flywheel/clutch with a 89 tranny and the other way around too.

no I didn't say you have a 88
When you do engine swaps with d series you have to order the clutch for the the flywheel not the motor.
First question
What year is the clutch for? Is it for a 89? Check the part # with ACT website
Does it fit on your trannies input shaft...if yes and it is a 89 clutch disk then the tranny is a 89-91.If its a 89 disk and it doesn't slide on to the input shaft then the tranny is a 88.
I forgot how to check there is a difference in the # of splines on the input shaft between 88 trannies and 89-91 I believe 88's have 21 splines on the input shaft and 89-91 have 20 splines...but don't go buy that as I forgot which way it is.
What to do now? Well if its a 89 clutch and you have a 89-91 tranny then buy a 89 flywheel.Or return the clutch and get a 90-91.
For sure all of the factory 90-91 clutch disks are sprung hub and the 89's are bushing hub. I have no experience with 88's but I believe they are bushing as well.
If you have a 89 pressure platye it won't fit on the flywheel you have either.
Hope that made some sense.

Does anybody know how to SPECIFICALLY distinguish what year the flywheel is?
like he said earlier it depends on the year of the flywheel, from what i've gathered
the sizes are different between 88, 89, and 90-91
the clutch disc sizes would be
88 - 190mm (?)
89 - 200mm
90-91 - 212mm
so measure the clutch disc seating area on your flywheel and go from there

Make sure you dont order a clutch KIT for a 92+ Civic. Although the pressure plate, clutch disk, pilot bearing, and alignment tool may be the same as the 90-91 Civic/CRX's........the ThrowOut Bearing will be for a HYDRO tranny. Make sure you get one for the cable tranny.

thanks for your help.
another bump to try and get a definite answer as to which clutch kit i should order.
1) kit for 91 CRX si
2) kit for 92 + civic(buy throw-out bearing seperate)
will either of these work, or only one of them?

First, make sure it's a 90-91. Look at the end of the input shaft, if there are no rings or grooves around it, it's an 88, one groove is an 89, and two grooves means 90-91.
If it's a 90-91, get the 90-91 SI clutch and PP, though I'm pretty sure the 92-95 is the same.
