B16A/EF Smoggability Question
OK guys, let me preface this by saying I DID do a search and while I found a lot of information, none specifically applied to my situation.
If I understand correctly, you can get a BAR sticker for a car equipped with a JDM engine as long as all of the U.S. spec smog equipment is present. As they cannot ascertain the model year of JDM engines I suppose the "same year or newer" clause does not effect JDM swaps. However, as no cars in the US had the B16A during the EF model years, is the only way to make it smog legal to convert to OBD 1 and using all the equipment for a '94 del sol vtec? If this is the case, it seems like a monumental PITA. However, many things regarding swaps and smog are just that, so could well be.
If anyone can shed some light on what is necessary to smog an EF/B16 car it would be greatly appreciated.

i believe that you are correct. you can try to register your car as a special vehicle according to dmv, and that MIGHT get you exempt from smog...look at my post a while back...but i have to make an appt to talk to the ref to see what i need to do to pass...good luck
they know the years of the motor...all they gotta do is look on the head stamp...plus the 1st gens b16a lack the extra "3" in the del sols block stamp of b16a3...they know...dont play them for fools....i tried, and they figured out my jdm b18c was not the usdm b18c1 but let me off since they B18c(1) were both released in 1994 which is newer than my 1990 crx...oh yea they wanted me to get proof from the dealer that my ecu was a factory matching OBD1 P72
...good luck
EFlsvtec has a bar sticker too!..talk to him for his story

oh you are so right however a brand new rule just came into affect in CA last year!!! check this BS out, it doesn't matter whether is USDM or JDM you cant put a DOHC engine into a car meant for SOHC. I just found this out a couple weeks ago because i did a GSR swap thinking it would be all legal and legit because its USDM but i found out wrong.

if you got the motor in already just take it to the ref and try especially since its done already and its usdm...i dont know if this is true but i had my motor BARed in july of 2002 so it wasnt that long ago and they were still accepting DOHC motors...to me it really doesnt make sence since ppl with v6 mustangs can swap v8 into their cars..it would seem like adding two extra cylinders would be worse than adding an extra cam

why dont you just cheat, either pay the smog guy $60, or change plates/ VIN with another crx that will pass. i did both of these
and how do you change the vin on the firewall?....its stamped in
