Anyone have an opinion on using the Exedy "race" clutch on a turbo d16z6? I'm shooting for atleast 200whp (after tuning and raising boost to 10-12psi) and will be using it for a daily-driver, autocross car and of course some F&F street-racing

I just want something that won't be a bear, will hold the power (no mad launches) and last for atleast 20k miles. Any advice?

Yeah, I've heard some bad shizzle about them on the B-series, but nothing on the D.

I was thinking about an Action, but I can't really find any info on them off of H-T, so I PM'd Rocket.

I think I want a full-face as the puck clutches seem to wear fast...

 

Bad **** on them? Exedy makes awesome clutches. I've been using the Organic one in my Si for a long time now. Then again i'm not boosted yet. But I plan on having over 200 wheel horsepower with my Exedy. However, there are a few Drag III Si's with Exedys around here.

**** if they are good enough for Skylines in Japan i'm sure they will work fine in your boosted Z6 Civic.

 

exactly. mine is on a b series but i'm sure the d is just as good of a clutch. i'm sure it would hold up fine. its a great street clutch.

 

Sorry, when I said that I heard bad things, I meant mainly about the install...particularly that there are issues with the thow-out bearings they supply and that you have to adjust pedal (or something) in a weird way...I know the clutch itself is supposed to be good, but since I'm going to install it with a friend I want to make sure it won't end up killing me!

 

I am using their Dual diaphram pressure plate with an action 6 puck disc in my ZC...

Pedal feel is perfect, and the 6 puck just adds to it's holding capacity.

I love it...

 

So, no rough engagement? Do you drive it in the snow/rain? Also, how long can a 6 puck be expected to last if I'm reasonably nice to it?

 

My Exedy organic in 99 Si just feels slightly stiffer than stock. It's an awesome clutch, i didn't have to do anything weird when I installed mine.

the adjustment instructions that they include clearly explain the simple process of adjusting the clutch. just because the procedure is a little different than others doesnt make it a bad clutch. seriously, if you're capable of replacing a clutch, you could adjust it in your sleep.

 

I'll have to get back to you on whether or not I'm capable of installing a clutch...after I do it...there's a chance that I'll be able to snag some time on a lift and use a tranny jack, so that would rock and make me feel warm inside.

 

well the 6 puck does provide a "firm" engagment, but it really depends on how you drive. Once you get used to it, you can shift it like stock.

I have been told by Kyle, the Action 6 puck will last 70,000-80,000 miles under normal driving. How long it will last is GREATLY dependant on how it's driven.

I was driving it in the rain/snow, but I stoped that once I got my civic beater. I live in Colorado afterall. It works perfectly as long as the tires are up to it...

 

Sweet to hear, since it's alot cheaper than the kevlar full-face...so, why don't you like the exedy? are you using the exedy or act dual diaphragm?

No. I LIKE the exedy. It is a very good pressure plate IMO. true there is better and if your going to get an action disc, I would reccomend you get a ACT pres plate. you have to buy the whole inchalata if you go with exedy.

 

I might do that then...mix and match...so, do you think it would be more wise to go with a 6-puck as opposed to a full-face? I've been inspired by boostedED9 breaking 300whp!!! and will probably push atleast 12psi on my car...

unrelated, but how do you like your Azenis tires in the rain? (nice gallery )

 

It all depends on the power your after and how the car is going to be used. My car is the weekend fun bucket/race car, and I am shooting for 400+HP, so I choose to use the 6puck.

If I were only going for 200-300 I would get a segmented kevlar disc, with the ACT HD pressure plate... Action makes these as well.

The Azenis are by no means a purpose built rain tire, but they actually do better than what some people say they do. I like them... Just don't take them out in the snow...
