Default Detonation at partial throttle on freshly built motor!!

it's freshly sleeved, 84.5, 9:1....
and right now it's just running off a base map, for the break in.

At partial throttle+ i'm getting an electrical clicking sound. I've honestly never heard what detonation sounds like, but I'm assuming that this is it. If it is, what can I do? If it's not, what else could it be?

It's only under load. And happens if I feather the throttle. I'm running 91 octane(highest in California)

Also, the CHECK ENGINE light comes on after running the car for a bit, notably after getting off the freeway, coming out of 5th gear. Goes away when the car is restarted(obviously)

Things I've tried:
1. oil change
2. retarded the timing
3. raised static fuel pressure

Things it's not:
1. Exhaust leak
2. I'm pretty sure it's not just something rattling loose.

I'm not noticing any leaks, no wierd smells.
The plugs don't look too bad.

I'm taking it back to IB on tuesday for tuning, but I don't think I want to make the 2 hour drive with the car like this.

What can I do?

could be your 02 sensor. try running some 110 or C16 and see if it still happens. Deatonation sounds like (dont ask how i know.... lol) bbs rattlin a pop can. its horrible.

is this what you hearing?

it's 17, so that's the speed sensor. But that's thanks to the speedo not being hooked up.

yeah sorta... but not that loud....

it sounds more like an electric clicking... like if you were to take two wires and tap them together... but really fast

sounds like its your injectors making that loud ticking noise or it could be just your pistons. most turbo pistons will make that ticking noise cause its made out of high silicon and it takes a while to heat up and expand.

Erik,

go to the valley, the intersection of Vanowen and DeSoto, take 101 towards LA exit Desoto, turn left at Desoto and keep going for a few miles...at that intersection, you'll see an Alliance Gas station, they sell 100 octane unleaded for 4 bucks a gallon

try it and see....

I'll fill her up with 100 tomorrow, and see if it still does it. I also tried retarded the timing sooo far back. It still did it, which leads me to believe that maybe it's not actually pinging?

But would the speedo make that ticking noise?

Just found out there's a 76 right off of Chesebro(agoura/calabasas) that sells 100, which is real close. So i'll head out tomorrow morning. i'll try it....

maybe its the valves? did u do a valve adjustment? or could be bad distributor. check and see if the rotor in the distributor is still good, sometime those are old and they come lose causing misfires and what seems to be detonation. good luck.

Whether or not you block is built doesn't make too much of a difference...detonation happens when there is too much relative heat in 1 or more of the cylinders.

Here's what I would try:

1. check plugs (fouled? not gapped properly? too hot?)
2. What size injectors are you running? (need more fuel)
3. Turn down the boost a bit.
4. check timing.

I'd say just from your description, either your plugs aren't gapped properly and/or they are too hot (not the right type for your setup), or your engine is not getting enough fuel...need beefier injectors...providing that your timing is ok.
