Hey guys, I am just sitting up late (3 AM) and I have been kicking over ideas for my car. Basically just a 94 VX, b18c1, yada yada. The motor was basically from Atomic Performance (doc charles), then to RPM NYC, and then to the buyer I bought it from.

When I recieved this motor, alot of crap was missing (shiftlinakge, ecu, axles..) and I seperately bought that stuff. Anyway lately it has been having oil problems and the compression #'s were pretty low. Around the numbers of :

205 - 190 - 185 - 180

So as you can see its a pretty broad range. As of now I dont want to deal with a motor that is burning oil and realistically I still like the car and would like to open track day it later on. So the real question is..

Should I go ahead and rebuild the GSR motor..? I had planned some stuff like jdm itr (.25 over), portflow gsr head, new bearings, seals, ctr cams, itr valvetrain, etc.

OR I could go ahead and buy a b20z longblock from IAS and since I have my GSR stuff from the present swap I basically re-use everything except the ECU. In the long run that is cheaper I guess...

So what way would you guys go..?

 

So are you saying you're going to make a crvtec? Using the gsr head and b20 block?

 

Why don't you put in a D15B7 or Z6 and build the B18C1 on the side? But yeah the B20 block sounds like a great idea!

 

rebuild the b18c1...I wouldn't even consider downgrading to a b20z.

It all depends on the build IMO.

Contact the user "Chad" because he's tracked his b20/VTEC often and says it's the portrait of reliability.

I cannot offer any advice on the B20/VTEC from personal experience, so i just id the next best thing.

 

I was just talking about a normal non-vtec b20z.

In that case, the anwser is simple rebuild the GSR motor. A B20z without a V-tec head or boost fails in comparison to a B18C. But if your thinking boost that's another variable

Three words: VTEC ownz j00! Haha, I would suggest rebuilding the GSR or doing a B20VTEC. I think you might miss the extra power the B18C gave you if you downgrade to the B20Z, but that is just my opinion.

 

Like Tom said, I can't answer from my experience. I have a "torqueless wonder" b16a2. I would definitely talk to Chad and Sakai.. Ulitmately, it's up to you.. Good luck..

 

I'm in the same boat... kind of...
I decided to rebuild my 130k mile 1994 B18C1 and decided to stick with the GSR motor since they are so beefy by design. This rebuilt motor can also take my new mods well.. skunk2 cams, higher redline, itb's, etc.
*There are a lot of things I would need to do to a B20 bottom end to make me feel satisfied that it will NOT blow up under my abuse. But I do want to travel down th eroad of more displacement someday.. maybe over the fall/winter next year I can build up a B20 bottom end

 

owen - that motor is gonna be beast!

to others - I think I have decided to rebuild my GSR motor just because I dont want to deal with having the GSR motor on a stand if i do a b20 longblock. Just more temptation to spend $$. But the b20 is not all that bad (non-vtec)... Higher CR, crower cams, some other flow mods and it hit the 172 WHP area with 150ish TQ.
