I'm rebuilding my JDM YS1 cable tranny. Here are a few choices of 5th gears from cars made here in NA.

Del Sol B16A hydro 5th - 0.848
92-93 'teg LS/GS cable 5th - 0.742
94+ 'teg GSR hydro 5th - 0.787

My current 5th gear - 0.880 <--- seems to be the highest 5th gear ratio of all the B-series tranny's.

Now I've heard some guys here have done the LS 5th gear swap and that its great for hwy driving. Will the hydro 5th gears fit my cable tranny if I decide to use those?

I didnt even know you could put USDM gears in the JDM tranny.

 

sure you can

 

just use a 94+ ls, since your fd will be a 4.40 this will make that 5th gear be a bit slower(rpms) than a hydro gsr 5th gear! you'll like it!

 

If I were you I would get a high *** 5th gear so I could get decent gas mileage.

 

Alright bumpin' because i would like more info on how to put a longer 5th into a JDM J1.

 

the easy way, take the tranny down your self and take it to your local tranny shop. they should charge you no more than 250 to swap the gear in, since it's the first gear there once the case is opened! or you could buy a helms manual, and take a crack at it!

 

by the way, where did you get this tranny from? and how much did you pay? i'm interested in one!

 

So all I need to do is decide what 5th gear I want (doesnt matter weather its a hydro or cable tranny?) and then take both of those to my local tranny shop?

it can be either hydro or cable, as long as it's from a YS1 on the cable side, or from a 94+ hydro ls(i think s80)!

 

so it has to be from a YS1 or a S80?

 

you got it! so how much did you pay for the tranny? and where did you get it?

 

Came with my motor. But a friend just picked one up for $400 from a guy in socal.

EDIT: oh yeah, for YS1 is that the 90-93 teg LS tranny or 92-93 GSR tranny or the JDM tranny?
