alarm aux output to open hood?
for security purposes, i'd like to remove the OEM hood release cable.
in it's place, i'm planning to install a trunk pop solenoid, and have my alarm auxiliary output open it. do you think that style solenoid would have enough travel in the cable to successfully open the hood?

I think so. SInce it is designed to open a trunk, which uses a simlar cable setup. If you cant get enough travel you can always make a lever bracket to give you more.
I dont think you are going to gain anything security wise by removing the factory release mechanism that you arent going to re-introduce when you add the soleniod, though.

OK, Im assuming your logic is to remove the locking mechansim or cable so some theif doesnt have access to it, either by reaching his hand or using a screwdriver to get to it.
So lets say you remove it. You still have to attach the soleniod to the release bracketry by some means, and probably not near as good and reliable as the factory did it.
By doing this, you re-introduce the weakness you tried to eliminate. Plus the reliabilty will be MUCH less than factory.
What you want is a hood lock unit, which is made by a couple of alarm manufacturers. It is basically a deadbolt for your hood, that is activated by the alarm system, and still retains stock hood release.

i don't think reliability will be an issue. i'm a competent enough of an installer to do it reliably.
yes it will have to connect to the OEM latch, but it completely eliminates the ability to open the hood by pulling on the OEM cable from under the DS fender lining. that is the only thing i'm trying to prevent. i also prevents them from easily opening the hood from inside the car.

You will still have access to the mechaism. Im sure that you could use a coathanger to grab the solenoid cable and ****** it open.
If you have an alarm and a shock sensor that will definitely pick up someone removing your fender liner, and breaking enough of the clips that hold the hood release cable in order to pull it.
The route you are taking really doesn't add up. The hood lock will be cheaper, easier, and more reliable in the long run.
As well, what are you going to do if the solenoid fails due to your wiring or a mechanical issue?

your points are totally valid. i would install the cable in such a way that you couldn't get at it from outside of the engine bay.
for now, i think i may just re-route the OEM cable thru the engine bay.

Sounds like a good idea.

that's all well and good, but that doesn't prevent them from pulling the latch and un-locking it once their in the vehicle.
i'm starting to think the electronic lock may be the way to go. $60 from autotoys tho
