Feeler gauges...
I have my McMaster catalog sitting here and there is about 3 pages of feeler gauges
I'm just trying to find the best one for my valve adjustments. I'm guessing metric obviously to match up with numbers in my Helms, but there are a couple different styles....Rounded leaf, Tapered leaf, and Offset leaf....They are also available in High carbon steel or 304 S/S....and what kind of leaf length do you think is best, they range from 3" all the way to 12"
I'm guessing 3 or 4" would be fine....Any suggestions?

Sorry IM does'nt work so I'll answer here: The feeler gauges angle at 45 degrees when you hold the gauges vertically. Like this:

Comes in a w/ 25 different sizes but you only need a couple of them for the valve adjustment.
Edit: Sorry for the crappy diagram but you get the idea.

Nate, if you got the extra cash, get the valve adjustment tool from SnapOn. Makes life easier using their tool. Its handy and VERY precise.

I've got two sets. One is offset at 45 degrees for doing valve adjustments. The smallest feeler is .005" on that one.
Then I have a second one that's straight and goes down to .002" for checking piston ring end gaps, ring-to-ring land clearances, and deck straightness.

How about the Matco gauges? You can buy them individually or by the set.
I think I'll get the EZ Grip guages before I do my next valve adjustment.

you can buy the snap on ones individally for like 3 dollars each. they are about 10 inches. and can be bent. If you are just ognna do valves. get tese sizes (standard usa) .005 and .006 intake tight/no go
.007 and .008 exhaust. tight/no go
you can go a little low on the intake side for more performance, but do not make the exhaust one any smaller than the .007. you dont want burnt valves. the standard intake is .006-.008 i think, but going lower to .005 is better. You just have to adjust them more often.

I just got the feeler guage set from AutoZone with the most blades, and then I bent the ends of the .006, .007, and .008 blades. I use the .006 and .007 as go/no-go on the intake and .007 and .008 as go/no-go on the exhaust.
I also picked up the 4-piece valve adjustment tool set from Harbor Freight for $25, back before they stopped selling them.
