think that you got it reversed. Like your topic says, i think you mean can you put the y1 lsd into a j1 trans (since the j1 never came w/ lsd). Since it's a b series cable trans, i do believe that you should be able to put the y1's lsd in it...just like you can put in the final drive out of another b series trans. not 100% sure tho

 

Yes you can, but you will have to modify some oil baffles inside the trans casing. Nothing major. Also the y1 trannies have a 4.266 final drive, whereas the J1/S1 has a 4.4 final drive. You can only drop it in if your swaping the countershaft along with it. The ring gears are not interchangible either, so you cant go that route.
