after driving for extended periods of time, once i open the door, the same smell is there. seems to be present once the radiator fan turns on? smells pretty bad, do i need to flush the coolant? what could it be?

strong yes. syrapy hmmm i'll go out on a limb and say yes. it's not a sweet smell buy a strong, stagnant one. likes something decomposing.

 

Could be a coolant leak at the heater hoses, radiator, or thermostat hoses. Certainly sounds like your coolant is cooking on the exterior motor or exhaust manifold.

 

Thats my guess, I'm thinking you have a coolant leak somewhere. Be sure to check all of your hoses...also when was the last time you had a flush and fill...if its been a while you might want to do that.

 

Yep coolant smells kinda sweet like that when burning on something.

Check you hoses and what not for leaks and look for the source.

 

does any substance show up under your car when you move it?

 

I have the same problem...I just recently bought a 91 Accord and the car smells real bad when I turn on the AC...the guy that I bought the car from said he just recently bought a new radiator cause the old one cracked...I checkde underneth and found no leaks...you guy have any more ideas what might be a way to solve this problem? I bought alot of that car scent thing and they are not helping! I'm wondering is there a filter that filters the air coming into the car?

 

Describe the smell. Is it like a musty smell? Sweet smell like the original poster? Does the smell exist when you run air without the AC on?

The one predominant smell I know is the musty nastiness. If AC is run for a while and then shut off without blowing more regular air out, moisture builds up and it smells just gross the next time the car is used. Whenever I get near somewhere I'm going, I run the air without AC for at least several minutes. Heck, sometimes I even turn on the heat and do it. That should take care of the moisture.

I once heard FORD was sued millions after a guy discovered a foul smell under the hood. He found it to be an old workers SANDWICH ...

get it checked u might get lucky and sue HONDA

i had someone spill brake fluid on my valve cover and it smelled like nasty vag for liek a week till it all burned off.

 

If it is just that musty old smell when the ac is on... you need to change the filter in there.

its on the passenger side of your carm under the hood, its in a black box, unscrew the box and take the filter out, then drop in a new one, ask someone what part number it is im sure someone can tell you so you can order one, they could prorobly tell you what tou need at your local parts store too.

its not the intake filter right? isn't there a filter for the ventlation system like for the AC?
