Default Paging Sonny! D series building

I did search and saw your post from july of last year

I just got done plastigauging my bottom end. (D16Z6)

I didn't record anything cuz I only torqued them by hand 50ft/lbs (est)

but my problem is that, i'm getting tolerances to about the same spec as you just under service limit .0018 - .0015 these would be considered loose, but my crank doesn't "spin" too freely.
It does feel smooth when I turn it over, just "Feels" tight.

This is my first engine buildup BTW and was wondering if you could turn your crank by hand or not.
Anything else you wanna impart to me as far as my buildup goes is more than welcome.
Thanx in advance!

You should be able to turn the crank by hand.

I didn't spin the crank when I was checking clearances because there was no oil on the bearings.

As I tightened down the main cap girdle when assembling everything, I used a wrench on the crank pulley nut to verify that the crank would spin smoothly. The bearings were well lubed at this point.

At this point, the pistons and rods were installed. I couldn't overcome the friction from the piston ring tension by just turning the crank by hand.

Do not spin the crank if there is no oil in the bearings!

just so you know I wasn't trying to spin the crank while clearancing it and or without assembly lube.

but as EK put it, the crank should spin freely at this point?
I'm going down now to do this right, and see what I've got.

ohh one last question. If I'm running within tolerances and crank & bearings are oiled and it is still hard to turn.... would anyone want to guess as to why?

the only thing that I can think of is the crank has walked, But I doubt my forged 4 cylinder crank has warped. correct? ahh well we shall see.

I will post my specs tonight if anyone cares.

WOW this topic is a hot one!!!

well, here is my update.
clearance readings after I torqued everything down.

Starting from the fly wheel.

Journal #1: .0017
Journal #2: .0012
Journal #3: .0015
Journal #4: .0010
Journal #5: .0015

I am right in the middle of the service spec. and this thing is STILL tight as FAWK!?!?!

after we
FYI
These are my engine bearing codes BBACB
and I am using clevite 77 bearings.

If you have the time to offer anything else, much appreciated.

It will be tight. i sure hope you pre-lubed all your bearings before install.

there is a lot of resistance from the final hone, that is normal.

Clearances are good.

YES, I did use lube!

yeah I assembled the bitch and turned it over once and it definately feels "tight" but it was "smooth" all the way around.

I had a chance to talk to my dad and a friends grandfather, both have had experience with assembling an engine, and both said that sometimes there gonna be tight but as long as I'm within spec I should be A OK.

I'm gonna of course re-re check all my measurements before the final assembly.
I just wanted to see what other people who have had experience with honda bottom ends think.

ohh and thanks for your reply I was starting to feel lonely on this board.
all except for sonny & EKB18C

Thanx again guys!

My vote is a little tight is ok, as long as its smooth...so I would say that you are ok. I will be throwing my engine together in the next week, so this will help clear some confusion that I might have...
