yeah but will it hit? 10's or 12's JL W7
I'm thinking of going with this setup
1x12w7
powered by a 500/1
my question is with that amp will I be able to take full advantage of that sub or should I settle on a 10w7
This is in a 92 hatch BTW.
thanx

JL recommends the 1000/1 for the 12w7. I would stick with the 12 over the 10, but I would save up more money for a bigger amp, or buy a 1000 watt amp from another manufacturer if money is the issue.
yeah definetly go with the 1000.1 amp if you are planning on a 12w7 but if you intend to go with a 10w7 the 500.1 will push it just fine. either way you go you will be pleased with the LOUD and clear sounding bass.
i have a 10W7 in a sealed box (JL specs) pushed by a 500/1 JL amp.
if i were you, go 12W7 w/ 1000/1 amp.
it probably is extra money you have to spend...
but trust me...i wish i would have gone that route before mines..
plus a ported box since i love rap (lots of bass)
if the ported box is done right it shouldn't effect sq that much..
well so i've been told...
i think my **** hits pretty hard...but my goal was to set off car alarms
in parking lots...i only set off some every once in a great while..

The JL500/1 would work great with the 12w7(or a single 10). The amps
true power is in the area of 800 watts on that sub. It will be sick bass
in the right enclosure.
Edit....you have a hatch....the 12 in a sealed you will be very pleased..
in a vented....lets just say cleanup aisle 5.
Now go play nice.

My true plans arent for ear shattering car alarm blazing bass.
I just wanna hear every note and feel alot of them.
it seems like half of you are saying that the 500/1 will support the 12 while the others say no?
anyone wanna give reasons?
this will definately be in an enclosed box of my own construction.
BTW I am looking to spend about $400 for the single 12 these are the best prices i can get on Ebay.
That about right?
thanx again!

either one will push the 12 just fine...just the 1000 will make it hit a lot harder...BUT the thing is...you have a hatch...so the sound is just gonna bounce everywhere...so either way...you cant lose

it's 500 watts rms...so is the JL 500/1 of course...
in order to experience the true benefits of the 12W7 which is 750rms,
you'd have to go with the 1000/1 amp.
yes ...you CAN power it with a 500/1 JL amp...but that would be a waste imo.
a car audio magazine reviewed the JL 500/1 and said the most it pushed
was like around 700 watts at a 2ohm load.
that's no where near the 750rms that the 12W7 can handle...you will be
wiring the 12W7 at a 3ohm load of course..
my experience with my sub, one 10W7 in a sealed box JL specs pushed by a 500/1
JL amp is that i have more than enough accurate clean bass for just about any
type of music i choose to listen to. in many cases, the bass is overpowering..
too much bass to where it seemed to cancel out some of the mids and highs that
were easier noticed before i got my sub.
i originally suggested you to go for the 12W7 w/ 1000/1 amp because that is what
i would have done...because i like setting off car alarms and watching the rear
view mirror of the car in front of me shake when i'm at stoplights..
and when people pull up next to me i like to have a "bump duel" and try to out
bump people =P
well..it's all up to you. oh yah, you'll also save room and weight with the 10W7
and 500/1 vs. the 12W7 and 1000/1, not to mention save money.
well very cool guys I really appreciate your advice!
I think I am gonna go with the 10 now, I originally wanted the 12 just cuz it's the big dog, but a 10 should bump especially hard in a hatch.
BTW this is me stepping up, my old setup was 1x10w0 with MTX 250w amp.
SO I will probably be really impressed anyway.

Definately save up for the 12...a set of brothers at my school have the w7s...one had the 12, one has the 10...the 12 wins hands down...
why not get 1 13.5
how are people getting the idea that the 12 and the 500/1 isn't a good match? the 12W7 will do everything the 10W7 and plus some more SPL. more linear displacement=more volume. the 12W7 has more potential than the 10W7. the only reason i might go with the 10W7 is if i can't afford the 12W7. i have 2 10W7 right now, but i regret it. i'm going to get at least the 12". 13.5 if possible.

the 12w7 will do great....but heres a plan
use the 12w6V2 or better yet..... 13W6V2
You save a few bucks...output is still kick ***...I know because I have built
way to many sub enclosures last year using the 500/1 12w7(10w7) combo
or for those on a budget 12W6V2 ( pair) and a 500/1
The final choice is yours...............Go forth and have fun.
