Default Is it really worthwhile going to an alarm installer?

An alarm is my next thing for the car, but do installers really have super-secret-ninja-installer powers or is it more worth my time (and money) to just install it myself? I'm not afraid of electronics at all but I was just wondering if there would be any advantage to having someone else do it for me.

Well speaking from an installer stand point, the only resource that we might have over you is access to specific DEI wiring diagrams. But other than that nothin really. I will say you have to know what you are doing to put an alarm in though. In a Honda, if thats what you are doing it in, it is pretty easy and basic. Let me know if you need a wiring diagram for your car and I will post it for you. By the way, what kind of an alarm are you putting in? I would definitely recommend the DEI alarm called the Viper 550 ESP. Its a remote start/alarm all in one. Check out DEIs website for more information on that alarm and the other ones that they sell. http://www.directed.com

I haven't even looked at anything yet because I have been waiting to swap out power doors and get that installed as an option with the alarm, but then I thought if I just do the installation I can add it all myself once I get them and it would make everything easier for me.

If you have the time to do a really sneaky setup then do it yourself. Its not too hard. You'll even learn how to solider by the time you are done. Just to remember to think like a thief when figuring out how to do everything rather than what is easy to install. Good Luck

Since you are a DEI installer, I have a question for you. I recently purchased the Clifford Matrix RSIII for my 97 accord ex. I was told by the people installing it (Best Buy) that a remote trunk release was not an available accessory. I was wondering if you knew this to be fact or not, because when I bought my car the sticker said remote trunk release on the sticker, and There is 2 visible wires (I believe red and black?) going to the trunk latch. If you could let me know Id really appreciate it!

Actually on that alarm, which is basically identical to the Viper 790 XV, it should have no problem with doing a trunk pop. As long as the trunk has a motor to it and wires which are accessible, you should be cool. Now you might need an extra relay for it but other than that you should be fine.

It is a pain in the a$$ to do a trunk pop on that car because it does not have a factory pop buttton.

So true......

Many Honda vehicles have a manual pull type lever trunk/hatch release.
To make this an automatic or powered type takes a little bit of work....and I say that with a hint of sarcasm ( its really a bitch to). You need to add a acuator to the latch or if your lucky retro fit a trunk release motor from the few Hondas that have it and wire it up. Oh what fun.

Yes...the days of DIY are just about extinct....you screw up now..it costs you wayy more than the bucks you would have saved. I also tell the story of a customer of mine who bought a radio, but did not want to have it installed..cause it cost to much
$77.30 parts/labor ( $45.00 labor/$30.00 parts). Okay at least buy the parts...nope dont need them. Well after breaking the dash, climate controls, antenna, chopping up oem harness.....the total cost was $750.00 to return it the STOCKby the dealer...and I still got to install the radio.

I not saying it cant be a DIY project...just be truthfull with yourself and know your limitations.

not trying to go too ot, but when you have the doors off ....... do yourself a favor and pre-drill holes to run wires through (speakers, window modules) ..... beats the hell out of having to drill out the frickin plug....
