Exhaust- Aluminized Piping vs. Stainless Steel
I'm planning on getting this axle-back exhaust by Dynomax along with the 4x9 oval stainless steel muffler by Magnaflow:

I originally wanted 2.25" stainless steel mandrel bent piping, but this setup only comes with aluminized piping. I know that stainless steel will last longer than aluminized piping, but how much longer? Is there a difference in weight too? And what exactly is aluminized? Is the piping going to look as different from the SS muffler as this aluminized muffler does?
By the way, what size is the stock piping on our cars and what kind of metal?

aluminized will probably last you bout 3-4 years depending on where you live. i wouldn't bother spending the extra loot for the ss, b/c by the time aluminized pipes rust out, it'll be time for a change anyway. it weighs about the same. that magnaflow on the right looks like its polished ss. the car comes stock with 1.5 - 1.75 in. diameter piping, made out of steel probably(to cut cost).
aluminum is more corrosion resistant than your typical steel that is used for exhausts, especially to the things it sees on your car. However, it is not perfect, and can not only get scratched through, but can have corosion with stuff in the air/water/roadsalt (cold climates mostly)........AND moisture sits inside the muffler because it might not heat up enough to evaporate the moisture.
Ok, I'm tired, and probably dont' make much sense.......cliff notes
aluminum isn't perfect
-corrosion from salt, water,air, ect
-scratches through to expose rustable material underneath (aluminized is aluminum coated)
-water sits inside the muffler and exhaust to continuously corrode

I believe "aluminized" usually refers to 'aluminized' steel...don't worry about it...
dip it in another metal to keep it from rusting....then once rocks hit it it'll rust to hell
Thanks for the help! So how easy is it for the aluminized coating to come off? If you didn't scrape it on anything and just did some daily driving, how long might it take to come off in upstate ny (bad winters)? And when it does, the steel underneath should still be just as good as the stock pipes right?
Does anyone know what dynomax aluminized piping will look like next to the stainless steel muffler from magnaflow? Is the aluminized coating darker, like almost black? And does that make it look different in spots where the coating comes off?

My HKS is Aluminized. It means its like coated in aluminum or plated in it or something. Mine came like an anthracite color. But I thought that was just powdercoating or something, not sure if it was the aluminum coating.
I have 3 inch aluminized piping from my cat to a dc sports axle back, and I noticed that it has a pingy, rattly sort of sound when u get on it, as opposed to the steel piping I had. And by the way aluminum doesnt rust. I'll probably get steel piping in a few months so that it sounds cleaner.
Has anyone else noticed whether or not aluminized piping makes that kind of a sound? It doesn't seem like it would affect it much since it's just steel with an aluminum coating on the outside, right?
I have that exact same exhaust actullay, i think its called a super-turbo or something.part # 17452 on that first link. and actullay the aluminum will go bad before the stainless steel will, but from what I've heard, there lifetime warranty on dynomax products. atleast for me there is.
also, i love the exhaust, sound great IMO

yeah aluminum is a metal that doesnt rust....
when u get a aluminum piping, all u gotta do its cover with some undercoat or other type of metal protector on top of the welds... that weld its what actually starts the rust.. i f u prevent that the rest of the aluminum piping wont rust...

Okay thanks, I'll have to remember to do that. Has anyone else noticed a difference in sound with aluminized piping? And does anyone have any pictures of exhausts with it?
Okay, so it's true that the aluminized piping will look black next to the SS muffler and tips... Does anyone have pictures of a setup like that (aluminized pipes w/ SS muffler or tips)? What piping is that, it's not magnaflow is it? I think they only make setups for 92+, that's why I'm just getting a magnaflow muffler w/ dynomax pipes.
